March 2, 2008 - I received word that the box is alive and well and was not destroyed in the fire. However, the clues are not accurate according to the most recent find. They were not able to find the trail but they did find the tree. Also one of the 6 stamps is missing but 5 were still there. Good luck on your search.

4/2008- As I can’t get to this location to double check on the box (I am in Idaho) here are some notes from the last letterboxers to find it:

The tree was NW of the North side of the building, about 20 paces up an incline. There was no path and the tree was the closest to the building. A warning that there are thorns on the tree.

8/9/2008 – Note from Recent Visitor: The path has been covered up by debris but they figured out the tree location.

Prior to paper and pen and alphabet, the only means man had to record his thoughts was to scratch pictures onto rock. This box was hand-carved and created by Lizman (Alex) age 10. The logbook was created by mom. The petroglyphs in this box do not necessarily represent Hawaiian petroglyphs but we think you will enjoy this “Build Your Own” petroglyphs letterbox.

Traveling south on Highway 30 toward Kahului, look for the Olowalu General Store located at Mile Marker #15. Directly behind the store and to the left is a silver water tower. Take the dirt road on the north side of the water tower toward Olowalu Valley. The gate is about 100 yards from the water tower. Pull in and park in front of the gate. There is a sign granting access to the 1/2 mile hike to the Olowalu petroglyphs.

Just before the hill on the right where the petroglyphs are, there is a building on the left (the only "building" at all along this trail). Go to the North side of the building and follow the trail leading west. 20 steps to a tree, letterbox is under SPOR Northeast side in the roots.

You do have to "reach up" a bit as the roots form an opening, so even if the top rocks are moved, the box will not be immediately seen unless you are looking for it.

The area immediately around the petroglyphs themselves is a little unstable and would not recommend kids running around there without parents checking it out first.

Enjoy your visit and hike to the petroglyphs. Should you note the box missing, it’s contents in bad repair or if you just want to say “hi” please contact me at Blackvelvetrav@yahoo.com. I am from Idaho and may need help with box maintenance should you encounter a problem. Aloha and happy hunting!
