This is about a 40 minute drive from Ottawa, and is part of Gatineau Park. The hike up the hillside along the falls is beautiful, but not for the faint of heart. The trail is rocky and uneven, and climbs several hundred feet. My 4 and 6 year olds love it. The water in the falls is deliciously cool for hikers' feet.

Directions to the Trail:

From Gatineau, across the river from Ottawa, take highway 148 west about 40km through Aylmer and on to Luskville. As you near the turn off to the Luskville Falls, you will see the escarpment looming on your right, with the Ottawa River in the valley to the left.

Look for signs for the Luskville Falls on your right, and drive the road as close as you can to the trailhead, either on the road or in the parking lot if it is open.

Finding the buck and bear:

Hike upward until you note a pink rocky face to the upper left of the path with a fallen tree lying high above, and a cave below (home of the bear?). In the middle of the path in the vicinity is a rotting 3 foot stump. From this rotting stump take a bearing of 345 degrees (north of northwest). Down is this hollow below is a fallen log, about 10 metres away from the stump. Search inside this log for the bear.

Continue your hike along the trail past the first rocky lookout over the escarpment until you reach the sign post saying "700m". Standing at the sign post, look north to the white natural arch. Walk to its origin. From this new vantage point, look west to the rock "wall". Walk there, but stop about 2 metres from the "wall" and look for a stone pyramid with a small rocky cave or hole beneath. Here you'll find the buck.

Good luck!
