Location: Cleveland Island in Wakeby Pond in Mashpee, MA
Difficulty: That depends… are you swimming or boating? (Very easy with a boat)
Time: About 15 minutes (including stamping in time) once you get to the island

The legend (according to an issue of Yankee magazine) is that President Grover Cleveland liked to fish in Peter’s Pond, Pimlico Pond, and Mashpee/Wakeby. He would portage his boat between the ponds (easier to do in those days, as I understand it). He particularly liked the islands in Wakeby Pond, and so he eventually bought them. He apparently liked Indian names, such as ‘Cotuit’, and so he named the three islands with names that (to him) sounded like they could be Indian: Comtuit, Stayonnit, and Geddoffit. Which one is which is unknown to me, but since the island with the big hill is the first one you come to (either from the Mashpee/Wakeby channel or, judging by the map, if you are coming from Pimlico Pond), I call it Comtuit. The island closest to the Lowell Holly Reservation and Sandwich beach has the most paths and space to walk around, so I call that one Stayonnit. And the smallest island is both difficult to get onto and covered in poison ivy, so it seems a likely candidate to be called Geddoffit. Other maps I've seen name them as Jefferson, Cleveland, and Keith Islands, so those are most likely the official names. Some day I’ll find out for sure.

How to Get There:
To get to Stayonnit, make your way (by boat, presumably) from the Mashpee boat ramp (located off Route 130 between the intersections with Great Neck Road and South Sandwich Road) to the left side of the opposite end of Mashpee Pond to get to the Mashpee/Wakeby channel. Go through the channel and head to the right of Comtuit (following the shoreline of the mainland) and then make a 180 degree turn around the peninsula. You will then be facing Stayonnit. Park on the SSW side of the island (the side facing the peninsula) at a gap in the shrubbery.

Instructions:
Walk to the top of an incline to a level area with a clearing. Take a heading of 315 degrees to face a stump. Walk down this path to another clearing with several beech trees and turn right with a heading of 80 degrees. Walk a short distance to another clearing. Continue walking straight toward the water and stop at the edge of the clearing. At a bearing of 120 degrees see a stump of fallen tree – the stump stands about 8’ high. There is the slightest of footpaths leading to this stump. The Stayonnit Letterbox is hidden under the fallen part of the tree (which is lying against the stump) under a rock and some sticks and leaves.

On your return trip, after you have passed through the channel into Mashpee Pond, turn left and follow the shore to the furthest sign and park there to go find the Cottage Window Letterbox.
