NOTES:

1. Bearing = degrees from TRUE north, NOT magnetic
north (magnetic declination in Belmont: 16 degrees west).

2. Pace = one footfall of either foot (I'm tall and
have a relatively long stride).

3. Step = same as a pace (strange but true). Used only because its plural has only one syllable--important for haiku clue construction...

4. T = a "T" intersection.

5. Y = a "Y" intersection.

6. X = a variable that you must figure out.

7. Clue Difficulty = 2 (1 is easy, 5 is almost impossible).

8. Terrain Difficulty = 1 (same scale).

9. Hike Length = About one mile (round trip).

10. There is poison ivy at Habitat, but the area near
the box and the access paths are generally ivy-free
(your dog will be able to find some, however). If you
ever accidentally touch some, get a bottle of TECNU
from CVS--the stuff really works if you wash with it
within 2 to 8 hours!

11. Directions to Habitat: Take Rt. 2 to exit 59
(Rt. 60, Belmont Ctr./Arlington Ctr.) and take Rt.
60/Pleasant Street west. Follow Pleasant Street for .6
miles and take a right at the second traffic light
onto Clifton Street. Take the first left onto Fletcher
Road. Bear left at the fork and take the next left
onto Juniper Road. The sanctuary entrance is .2 miles
ahead on the right.

Habitat address: *10 Juniper Road, Belmont, MA 02478*

12. Sadly, it appears that dogs are no longer allowed at Habitat. :-(

CLUES:

Park at Habitat,
(10 Juniper in Belmont)
A quite-special place.

Pay nominal fee--
Free for Audubon members!
(You KNOW you should join...)

'Tween house and garage,
Find the Pinus Rigida.
Head west on hard path.

Just before greenhouse,
Take path left (up hill)
To stand of tall pines.

From middle of trees,
Take trail bearing three hundred,
'Till it makes a T

Look left, see low bridge.
X is number of wide bridge boards.
COUNT THEM, for later...

Take path back toward NORTH,
150 paces from bridge end:
(Pass the vernal pool)

Turn, bearing sixty,
To find a Y path; head left.
Walk through a meadow.

At lower meadow,
Turn left (before birdhouses).
Walk to Turtle Pond.

At the water's edge,
View thirty degrees across:
Find Yellow Birch. Go.

Say pond is clock face:
Betula Alleg... at six,
Walk to eight o'clock.

From Overhang Tree
Climb up the hill for X steps.
Big rock left of path!

Stand at point of rock
Now sight a line to home plate.
Walk along that line.

Where the line crosses
An old stone wall, please look down...
Find moveable stone.

Look under the stone
And probably under leaves.
Your quest will end here!

You can have a seat,
Stamp up, then re-hide box well.
Is there more to do?

Remember: STAMP IN, TRASH OUT! Help letterboxing
build it's good reputation by finding some litter and
packing it out with you!
