07/21/09 Replaced missing box #2. Box #3 has been rehidden in a new spot, due to it never being rehidden very well where it was!

The Mission Trail Nature Preserve was designated as a nature reserve in 1976. It is a 35 acre park up a small canyon surrounded by the Carmel Mission and residential neighborhoods. The top of the park is covered in Monterey pines, oak, and toyon trees. The lower end is covered in grasses, willows, and even the occasional redwood. There are tons of wildflowers and in the summer months is bright with nasturiums and fuschias along the gully. This is a dog friendly park and very popular with Carmel residents. Staying on the trails will keep you out of the poison oak.

Difficulty: Easy 1/2 mile loop. This is a wooded doggie paradise. Jogger strollers probably ok. Watch for poison oak. At the time of box planting, there was no poison oak near any of the boxes.

Place: Mission Trail Nature Preserve. Carmel. South on Hwy. 1. Turn Right at Rio Road. Follow this road maybe a mile. Preserve is on the right, the Carmel Mission is across the street on your left. You can follow any directions to the Carmel Mission also.

Clues: Box #1) - Park on Rio Road and walk through the gate and straight forward on the main wide trail. Look for the second wide trail turning to the left (NW). Immediately after turning up this trail, look for the large redwood tree on your left. Go around and to the back of the tree. At the base (under leaves and rocks) you will find treasure #1 and a paper telling you how to line up these three stamps in your journal. The
stamps go together comic-book style. There is only one journal you need to stamp into. The journal is in box #3

Box #2) - Continue forward on the trail as it curves up to the right in a northernly direction. Look for a man-hole cover in the middle of the trail. **NOTE** A recent finder reported that there are new wood chips on the trail and you can no longer see the man-hole cover, so just try to find the redwood tree. It is about 80 steps from the first redwood to the second redwood.** Stand on the manhole cover and look at about North to the redwood tree. It is about 15 steps away. Go to the tree and look behind at its base under leaves, sticks, and a rock.

Box #3) - Continue on the trail again in the same direction. On to new places. Walk until you come to the next intersection. See the cute little bridge on the right?Pass over it and the next bridge. There is another intersection here, so take the trail going right. It is going back down the hill and back towards the beginning. Walk down the trail and after a bit you will walk through a cement wash (usually dry). After walking across the cement, stand on the edge of cement and count about 65 steps, continuing down the trail. Look to the left and see a grassy trail leading into a copse of trees and benches. Go to the benches. Stand in front of the plaque that tells about the park, then look to your right. There is a redwood tree split into three trunks behind the bench. In the crook of the tree lies your prize. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE rehide well!!!!!. Rehide the box DEEP under tons of redwood duff and sticks. This is the last time I will replace this series. If it disappears again, I am retiring the series. I live to far away to maintain it regularly.

Be stealthy and sly. This is a very popular wooded dog and jogging area. Watch for poison oak. Please take your time and rehide everything really, really well! I have recarved and replaced these boxes to many times! Have fun!
