Alive and well: 3/20/07.

Batrick, age 7, loves the mnemonic device: Never Eat Soggy Waffles. It helps kids remember the compass points: North, East, South, and West. We planted this letterbox to help other kids practice their compass skills. Adults are welcome too—warning: the clues take you in a slightly circular path, but the walk isn’t too long.

This mini box is hidden at 11th Street Park. There are other boxes there, including our own 11th Street Owl.

Start at Batrick’s team practice baseball field at 11th and Shirkmere. You can park along Shirkmere. Go to the green bench. Walk Eat across the field. When you get to the end, go Never. Take the path there. At the first junction, go Waffles (or the most-waffle-like trail). At the next junction, go Never at the Y (keep going Never at the next very-quick junction). At the next intersection, go Eat. Continue until the next junction. Go Soggy to the next intersection. Go Eat for 12 steps. There are two trees right next to each other. Letterboxing Kids Never Eat Soggy Waffles is tucked into a nook in the back of the tree on the left. There’s a shorter way out, which you should be able to see from the last intersection.
