Description

Note: On October 24/09, a Letterboxer reported that recent Typhoons took out both the fence and the Letterbox. May it rest in peace.

Vietnam, in SE Asia, shares borders with Cambodia, Laos and China and features 3,200 km. of coastline facing the South China Sea. With an area of 332,000 square km. and a population of some 77 million, Vietnam’s topography varies from coastal plains to mountain ranges.

Vietnam has a tropical monsoon climate with dry and wet seasons that vary from north to south and with varying elevations.

As the most densely populated country in SE Asia, population control is an important initiative. 20% of the population is urban and 80% is rural. With over 55 minority languages, the literacy rate in Vietnam is 92%.

Although Vietnam is a socialist republic governed by a communist government, there are many signs of democratic reforms throughout the country.

The market-based economy is extremely vigorous with daily examples of foreign dignitaries visiting the country and offering all types of support, particularly financial, and establishing alliances and mutual initiatives.

Vietnam’s economy is mainly based on rice farming and Vietnam is now the world’s 2nd largest exporter of rice. Vietnam also has substantial exports of rubber, coffee, tea, electricity, crude oil and coal.

With a population over half that of Japan, the hard-working and competent Vietnamese are a force that bodes well for the future prospects of this dynamic country. The per capita income is about $300.

The Vietnamese people are a beautiful, gentle and friendly race. Visitors to the country are made to feel welcome and there is minimum fear of crime against sensible visitors.

While Hue is the cultural, religious and educational heart of central Vietnam, Da Nang is the industrial, shipping and air transport gateway. With a population of over 700,000, Da Nang is the 3rd largest city in Vietnam.

Da Nang is 108 km. south of Hue and has the only deep sea port in central Vietnam and in the 19th century succeeded Hoi An as the most important port in central Vietnam.

About 30 km. south of Da Nang is the ancient port town of Hoi An on the Thu Bon River. Hoi An has been very successful in attracting Vietnam tourism and in 1999 was designated as a World Heritage Site.

Hoi An is one of those rare places in Vietnam where you’ll find genuine Vietnamese architecture. The fabulous ‘Old Quarter’ still has vestiges of native architecture among the more recent Chinese styles and newer French houses.

Much of the country was destroyed during the wars, but Hoi An survived, even through the traumatic 1960s and 1970s.

Today, Hoi An is typically one of the absolute highlights of any tourist’s visit to Vietnam. There are too many sites and experiences to list here, but these attractions are well presented in any of the many tourist books on Vietnam. We highly recommend staying in Hoi An as opposed to Da Nang – you will not be disappointed.

On your quest to discover the My Khe Beach Letterbox, make sure you visit the ‘Marble Mountains’ (Ngu Hanh Son) which are about 1 km. from My Khe Beach – simply follow the signs.

About 6 km. south from Da Nang, and only a km. or so from Marble Mountains, My Khe Beach stretches out as far as the eye can see. This immense white sandy beach was as popular with war-weary GIs as it is with today’s tourists.

The R&R beach featured in the China Beach TV series is actually the My Khe Beach, however, in the interests of promotion, the beach further south has been called China Beach to draw people to the government hotel there.

My Khe Beach is located about 6 km. east of Da Nang and about 24 km. north of Hoi An. Providing you get to the correct beach, the My Khe Beach Letterbox is an easy find assuming it is not discovered and treated as a curiosity piece by some enterprising Vietnam citizen.

The ‘My Khe Beach’ Letterbox is located at My Khe Beach.

Clues

To find the My Khe Beach Letterbox, proceed to WC at the beach.

At the back corner of the WC, turn around 180 degrees and you will see a security fence running along behind the WC for about 25 yards where it has a corner and turns away from the WC and heads north.

Walk along the fence (away from the WC) to the 16th upright support (about 40 yards from the corner).

The My Khe Beach Letterbox is hidden by this upright support against the wall under a few rocks and covered by miscellaneous debris.

Once you have found the My Khe Beach Letterbox and signed in, thank you for replacing the Letterbox to ensure the integrity of its hiding place.

Please ensure that there are sufficient stones and debris protecting the Letterbox so that it is well protected from the view of passersby. Thank you.

We hope you enjoy the beach and the incredible area history in your quest for the My Khe Beach Letterbox.
