On a recent trip with my family to the Black Hills, we passed through the panhandle of Nebraska. I hadn't been to the area in years, it was wonderfully nostalgic to be there. So I decided to plant a box to commemorate my trip.

From Crawford, NE, go west approximately three miles on Highway 20. As you enter the Fort Robinson State Park complex, take the first right. This is Soldier Creek Road, but is not marked. You will know you are in the correct place because there are two large adobe pillars, one on each side of Highway 20, at the intersection. Go 1.6 miles on Soldier Creek Road to a sign that says "Mexican Cliffs Parking". Turn right on the road by this sign, and proceed to the circular parking lot. There is a fenced in area that contains picnic tables and information signs about the local Bighorn Sheep. To the left of this area is a little used service road with a faded sign indicating it as such. Walk up this road to the crest of the first hill.

Look to the left--there are three downed pines stacked on top of each other. Towards what once was the bottom of the trees there are yuccas growing through and around the logs. The box is under the top log against a yucca. Look out for the yuccas--they are pointy.

This is rattlesnake country, so be cautious. Take a long stick and poke at the ground ahead of you as you walk.

This is an easy box to find. Once you get to the parking area, which is less than a mile off of Soldier Creek Road, it is about a five minute walk.

Take some time and enjoy the park, which has a very rich historical background. Also, while you are there look for the box placed by my Dad whose letterboxing name is Hook, Line and Sinker.
