This letterbox is a tribute to Mama Stork, the ultimate "early bird."

The Sunrise letterbox is located in La Boiteaux Woods Preserve, 5400 Lanius Lane, in College Hill. From Northside, take Hamilton Rd to Hillcrest (a gorgeous stone church, Grace Episcopal, is on the corner there), turn right, then turn right again on Lanius. Park in the lot at the preserve building.

This is a moderately strenuous hike, less than a mile, with some hills. Though not well known, La Boiteaux Woods is considered by many to be the crown jewel among Cincinnati's preserved green spaces. This enchanting mixed mesophitic woodland is habitat to an interesting diversity of wildlife, which includes white-tailed deer, red and gray fox, raccoon, opossum, mink, sharp-shinned hawk, barred owl and eastern box turtle. Native wildflowers are a part of this natural community and color its landscape intensely in spring, summer and fall. Bring compass, pen, and inkpad. (If you find yourself feeling lost at any point, just follow the trails uphill and in a northerly direction – they all terminate at the preserve building).

To the box:

Take the "Wishing Tree" trail from the entrance to the parking lot (it is where Lanius Lane meets the parking lot, adjacent to the mailbox). You will come to a trail marker post – ignore it and continue forward. Be sure to follow the arrow on the green post. Soon you will find yourself meandering along a stream to your right and will cross two "boardwalks." By and by you will come to another trail marker post. Take the "P" trail up the steps. Take the unmarked trail branching off to your right, and then go right when you come to the "T" (no trick here – "T" means the trail runs into another trail running perpendicular to it). Stop when you come to the top of the steps. Look immediately to your right to see a large fallen tree laying in a SE-NW direction. The letterbox is under the tree, about where the tree makes a "Y," camouflaged under some bark.

To get out, you can go back the way you came, or you can take this shorter route:

Go back to the "T" and take the trail leading north. At the "Y," take the trail leading uphill (of course), or 330 deg. Take the steps up the hill (use the handrail). Go right at the "T" and continue uphill (this leg is a bit easier). You will come to another set of steps with a handrail (oh, no!), but you will be rewarded at the top with a water fountain and some nice benches to take a rest. Your car is parked on the other side of the preserve building.

I hope you enjoy this wonderful preserve! Email me if you find the Sunrise.
