7/10/09 -- Ace + Lox are back on their feet and are happy to announce that "Letterboxed Movies" is back up and running. There have been a few changes to the clues and we have updated them. Enjoy!

LOCATION: Lower Vine Brook Conservation Area in Lexington. For directions, go to your favorite mapping program, and where it asks for address or intersection, enter Utica and Dunham, Lexington. Park at the end of Utica. You’ll see a Lower Vine Conservation sign.

WALK INFO: The walk will take approximately 1 hour depending on clue-solving.

STAMP: Hand drawn & carved
BRING: Pen for working out clues

INFORMATION: Lower Vine Brook is nearly 100 acres of mostly wooded habitat covering varying elevations. Most of it is flat, though there are a few ridges where surefootedness is required. Not recommended during snow or slippery conditions. The restoration effort that has been taking place has made a nice improvement to the area. There are several boardwalks that have been installed which makes things a little easier to get around. If you haven't visited in awhilewe suggest that you return.

CLUES:
To solve this letterbox you will need to put your movie knowledge to the test. You will need to figure out the 23 movies used in this puzzle. There are 2 ways to do this. You can figure the titles out yourself (trivia ranges from easy to very hard) or you can take the easy way out and get the titles by sending an email to letterboxed.movies@gmail.com (it should auto respond immediately.)

Here are the 23 clues (if you send away for the titles skip this section.)

This classic is the story of WWII British prisoners of war carrying out orders from their Japanese captors. Winner of many Academy awards, including Best Actor, Director, and Picture.

Once you have the list of 23 movies, you are ready to start.

Your trek begins with the wooden stairs leading to the trailhead. You will notice mid-way down the stairs, a post with a "Restoration" sign on it. What color is the sign? Find the associated movie title on the list and cross it off.

Start on the trail. Soon you will come to a boardwalk. Count the number of boards you walk across. Find that movie title on the list and cross it out.

You will come to a grassy area with a larger area behind it. Remove the name of this area from your movie list.

To the left you will see another boardwalk. Follow this trail. Eventually you will see some large objects to the right of the trail. Find the movie and remove from list.

Staying left at the intersection, this trail will soon leave the heavily wooded area and go off to a winding, grassier, more open area. At certain times of the year it may be somewhat overgrown. There is another boardwalk here. Continue until you see a series of brownish posts that you need to walk between. Count them and remove this movie from the list.

Immediately on your left is a large house. As you walk past it, note the # of the house and remove this movie from the list.

Up ahead and to the right you should see a green sign (be careful, it might be tucked behind some trees). Walk to it. Note the symbol and remove this movie from the list.

Continue on the path the green sign leads to. Shortly you will come to several concrete markers on the left with a large object behind them. Remove this movie from the list. Also on this object are a number of metal posts. Count these and remove this movie from the list.

Return to the path and continue in the direction you were headed. On your right there will be a large fenced in area. Remove this movie from the list.

As you continue, note what’s alongside you on the left. Remove this from your list.

Continue on path. Keep an eye open on the right for a dirt trail that leads back into the woods. Take this. There will be another boardwalk. Look on the left for something nailed to a tree. Remove this movie from the list. Now count the number of boards on this boardwalk and remove the number from the title on you list.

Continue on this trail until you come out into a 4-way intersection. Turn left. Soon you will come to a trail on the right that leads up a hill. That’s where you’ll want to go, but not yet… first you’ll want to walk a little further ahead to get two clues. First, find an object embedded in a pile of tar and moss. Remove this movie from the list. Second, notice the large tree branch blocking your path. Note what is hanging beneath it. Remove this movie from the list.

Now return to the trail and head up the hill. Stay straight at the first intersection. At the fork, go right. At the next fork, go left. Shortly you will see a large bulbous tree trunk with a certain number of trees growing out of it. Count and remove this movie from the list.

At the next fork go left. Soon you will find yourself walking toward a gray house. At the T go right. Between you and the gray house is an object. Remove this movie from the list.

Continue on this trail. You will pass between 2 signs. Stay left at the next fork and follow this winding trail. When you find yourself walking over patches of bare rocks, stop to work out your final clues.

You should have 6 movies remaining on your list. Letter them, (in the order they appear) A through F.

Now…
Go (MOVIE A) to the fork.
Go (MOVIE B) 10 steps.
Go (MOVIE C) 35 steps to (MOVIE D)
Go (MOVIE E) 55 steps
Find the box in (MOVIE F)

Please rehide well, using the slate tile as a roof.

To get back:
You’ll want to go back on the trail you came on. When you look back the way you came, you’ll see two trails, one less visible than the other. The one you came in on is the less visible one. Take this back to (MOVIE D). You'll see 3 little trailheads. (That middle one is steep!) Take the furthest one on the right. This is an interesting little trail that winds over a small ridge. Watch your footing! Take a left at the boulder and then a hard left at the intersection. Follow this trail all the way to the pond (please note this trail may be quite wet at certain times of the year.) Go left. This trail (staying to the right at the fork) will take you back to your car.

Enjoy the movie!
