We have enjoyed finding others' letterboxes so much, we decided to try some of our own.

These 3 letterboxes are located in Edmands Park, known to the locals as Cabot Woods. This is a somewhat smallish tract of forested land within Newton, a highly developed suburb of Boston. In placing these letterboxes within these woods, we are acknowledging the importance of green spaces anywhere we can find them. The first two are missing and only the Vorpal Blade box remains.

*** To maximize your letterboxing, also check out Picasso Peace Dove in this same area.

Directions: From Rt. 128/95. Take the route 30/Commonwealth exit East, heading towards Newton. After a little more than 2 miles, take a left at a light onto Walnut Street. (You might notice the statue depicting Marathon runners on the northwest side of the intersection. This section of road along Commonwealth Avelnue is on the Boston Marathon route. Although the route is here is slightly uphill, the infamous Heartbreak Hill is still a bit further on the Marathon route.) After the turn, continue on to a light at Cabot Street. Take a right. There will be a stop sign at Harvard Street. Continue forward on Cabot Street. Take a right at the third right onto Westchester Rd. Follow this road to its' end. The trailhead should be obvious. Park before the gate.

On the right after the gate is a soccer field. In the fall you may be lucky enough to find the BC women's soccer team at work/play. In the past, we have happened upon a game between the BC and Brown women teams.

IMPORTANT!! Also--there are 2 sets of directions. The first one leads you in a loop so that you hit all three letterboxes on one long walk. (The sequence here is letterbox #1, letterbox #2, then letterbox #3 and back to the start.) The second set has you go to the first letterbox and then back to the start, then to the second, then to the start, then one the third, then back to the start, taking you on three short walks, doubling back on themselves.

First Directions-

Flightful Dragon Letterbox:
Walk past a small stream to the right. The trail will split-take the left path. Continue down this path until you come across a small, grassy trail to your right. This is insignificant-ignore it and keep walking. As you walk, there will be a large log on your left that is on the trail. Slightly after this the trail will start to bend to the right. As you keep walking, the trail will bend to the left. Shortly after this, you will see a large log to the left and a huge tree to the right. Resting on this tree are some other dead trees. In the log to the left was were this box was hidden, but some mice decided to make a home of it, so this box is completely new. As you keep walking, you will lumber up to the top of a small hill. At the top there will be a trail heading right - it's very stony and steep. Take it. You will find a small trail branching off to the right, but you should continue on the main trail. Soon there will be a large, hollow log to the left of the trail-it is broken into halves. Find the hole in the larger half and look inside-there you will find the letterbox!

Lord of Birds
Continue in the direction that you are headed. You will walk down for a ways, then horizontally, then downhill again. Finally you will find a triangular section of grass. In the middle there is a plank of wood. If you read it, you will find that it is the grave of a dog. Take the path to the right. Walk a very short ways and take the trail to the left. As you walk along this trail, there is a small stream to your left. You will pass a tall stone chimney, of sorts. It is covered with graffiti. Keep walking for a long time. There will be a light at the end of the tunnel-run towards it as fast as you can! When you come out, turn to your immediate right and follow the miniscule path. You will come to a bridge. Stop.

Look to the home of a troll who ate goat brothers two out of three,
In other words under the path is the prize to be found by thee
Hidden in a corner the treasure you will see.

Please put it back where you found it with the lid tight.

The Vorpal Blade Letterbox

Continue until the end of the fence. Following another path, walk past five stone pillars. The sixth will be broken. As you walk on, you will pass five more pillars. To your left is a hill and you should be able to see the sky, even with all the foliage. Keep going until you see on the left a pair of skinny birch trees, one leaning on the other. Turn right and take 5 steps. You will see 2 parallels on the ground. Go to the right end of the parallels. You are now near a group of 3 or 4 trees, depending on how you look at it. Look between the twins. Go in front of the twins and go 5 paces forward to a tree (not a pine tree). Turn right and walk 5 paces. You will see another line, like the parallels, on the ground. Take out the leaves, rocks, bark, etc. and voila! Make sure to prop up the box with the rock and cover it with leaves when you go. Several people haven't hidden the box properly, as recorded by finders in the log. Make sure you cover it completely.

LORD OF BIRDS

This starts at the same place as the others. Walk past the path with a stream-it may look interesting, but thats not the way to go. The main trail will seperate into two bigger paths. Take the one to the right. As you walk a little farther, you may want to admire the stream.
Carry on until you get to the grave of a dog, Snickers. About five kid-sized paces before that is a path. Take it.
This is such a long path! You will find a chimney. Keep walking. Suddenly you will see a light at the end of the passage! Run towards it as fast as you can!
When you come out, turn to your immediate right and follow the miniscule path. You will come to a bridge. Stop.

THE VORPAL BLADE

Start at the main trail into Cabot Woods. Follow the trail until it branches into three. Take the right fork.
Walk 60 paces. To your right is a hill and you should be able to see the sky - even with all the foliage. To your left is a clearing with small pine trees.
Walk 5 paces to the left. You will see 2 parallels on the ground. Go to the right end of the parallels.
You are now near a group of 3 or 4 trees, depending on how you look at it. Look between the twins.
Go in front of the twins and go 5 paces forward to a tree.
Turn right and walk 5 paces. You will see another line, like the parallels, on the ground.
Take out the leaves and voila!
Make sure to prop up the box with the rock and cover it with leaves when you go.

Let us know what you think - this is our first foray into hiding boxes, and even though we've tried to make sure everything's correct, it's hard to be certain.
