UPDATE: 9/17/05 THIS BOX WAS ACCIDENTALLY FOUND AND THEN DESTROYED. Fortunately, the logbook was recovered and returned by conscientious students of the local school. A new stamp and hiding place will be created in the near future.

Gilchrist is in Central Oregon, about 50 miles south of Bend (16 miles south of Lapine) on Highway 97.

This box could be considered a 'drive-by' but why not wander the downtown area and then visit the Gilchrist Mall. Oh, wait-that's all the same place.

Here's the quick tour starting from the south-the Gilchrist Grocery and Deli-all the basics plus a cafe/diner/grill sort of area to sit a spell.
Next door is the Gilchrist Post Office (97737)-closed 1PM - 2PM during the week.
Step across the breezeway now and visit Gilchrist Video. Most of the current releases available same as at the big box stores on DVD.
Continue your stroll north until you reach the beauty shop, by appointment mostly but sometimes they can fit you in.
OK, now before cross the next breezeway you can head for the letterbox. Turn right out of the beauty shop. Before you exit the breezeway you'll see a spot on your left that looks like it used to have a sort of ladder thing going up into the space above you. Stand there with your back to the ladder space and look up. You see the kind of shelf-y area. If nobody's been too nosey, you should be able to reach in there and grab the box. I didn't push it back any farther than I could reach.
Once you have found your treasure come back down the breezeway. Cash in some of your travelers' checks at the bank then mosey on into the restaurant. Now you may have just had a nice snack down at the Grocery/Deli but you still want go in to the restaurant area. Enter the building but instead of going into the restaurant head up the few steps and stop in at the Pine Lounge in the back of which is the small sanctioned bowling alley in the country!
