4 Wheel Drive to the Top of the World
Yogo Peak – Little Belt Mountains

This is very remote and unknown by so many that we have put a Letterbox at the top with these detailed driving directions so that you can enjoy it also.

From Utica and after you have experienced what most claim to be the worlds best hamburger at the Ox and Yoke Bar travel south into the Little Belts on a gravel road.

Shortly after passing Sapphire Village and The Blue Nugget Bar (on the right) you will be approximately 10 miles south of Utica.

There’s a Y in the road and you will go to the right fork which will have a Forest Service sign for Yogo Creek Range, Yogo Creek & Dry Wolf.

In The Montana Atlas and Gazetteer, page 58 you will see this at C2. Yogo Creek as FR266. The Peak is shown on page 57, C & let’s say 8.75. Dry Wolf Creek, FR251 from Stanford will also get you there but these directions are from Utica. These two come together for the last 1 mile journey to the top.

Turn your odometer now to zero at the Y and it would be difficult to get lost.

So, now that you have just turned right after passing The Blue Nugget you will keep on the road and know that there are wonderful picnic places and camping the whole 17 miles.

  • Pass the Game Range Buildings to the right at 1.6 miles.
  • At 5.6 miles you’ll go through Toll Gate. This natural gate/pass was used as a money maker for the owner of this property in the early 1900s.
  • You’ll pass the road to the Yogo Sapphire mine on the left. This is Private Property.
  • At 6.6, miles keep straight (Dry Wolf)
  • At 8.6, straight still. There’s a nice option here of taking a 1 ½ mile hike up Bear Gulch Trail or to the left is great camping on Yogo Creek.
  • Keep straight – sign for Dry Wolf.
  • At 13.2 the Yogo/Morris Trail head is to the Left. Keep right and go straight.
  • NO TRAILERS OR CARS PAST HERE
  • At 14.8 cross Elk Creek.
  • At 16 miles, stop and enjoy the view. This is the spot where the road from Dry Wolf joins and it is a very rough 4 wheel one mile to the top.
  • At 17 miles you are on the top...almost. This is a lovely meadow. Don’t crest the hill but turn off the more warn gravel road onto the dirt road which is to your left (south).
  • You will see a grove of Sugar Pines that you can drive through. It is here.
  • This first island of pines on the left is where you will find the letterbox.
  • At the base of one of the trees you will see a square rock placed right in front of the crooked tree stump which the box is under.
  • Congratulations.
  • The trip would not be complete however if you didn’t pass through the next meadow and climb to the top of the rock pile and stand on the top of Yogo Peak.
  • There are also fire rings within the Sugar Pines to the Right and it is a wonderful place to camp and enjoy the sunset and moon rise.

Blessings, Suenick
