Burgess Falls State Natural Area

"A scenic, 3/4 mile riverside trail leads you to a distant rumbling. At the trail's end, you will discover the beauty and splendor of nature that has come to be known as Burgess Falls, a 130-foot waterfall located in a large gorge on the Falling Water River."
-Burgess Falls State Natural Area's brochure

**** August, 2007: These clues are no longer accurate, but the box is still there, and findable, by sort of following the directions, even though the railroad ties are all disintigrated now. If you are willing to try a challenge, to search for this box, I would appreciate it if you would send me more accurate clues."

At the Big Falls overlook, locate the sign which announces "Park opens 8.a.m Closes 1/2 hour before sunset." From the end fencepost to its left, a social trail snakes up the slope at roughly 200 degrees. Climb up among the trees, counting until you reach the fourth railroad tie. If there seems to be a choice to make along your way, keep to the left. As you stand before your railroad tie, find 270 degrees (give or take for those with spiffy-er compasses than mine!). See the social path? Follow it for 18 steps. (If you have longer legs than mine, you've gone too far it you step off the cliff!) On your left, just three steps off the trail is a large stone. The Burgess Falls letterbox is nestled against its back, shielded by more rocks. Rehide carefully!

-Bring your own pen and ink.
-A steep trail leads from the Big Falls Overlook right down to the river. If you're so inclined, bring your swimming togs. You can play under the waterfall.
