From Mass Pike. Take Exit 17 to Newton Corner. Stay in the left lane following Rt.16. Turn left at the lights following Rt.16 just a few 100 feet. Staying to the far right lane baring right onto California St. you should see the river to your right. Drive along the river to the next 4 way intersection about a ½ mile. At the lights bear to the left. As soon as you bare left you will see a small parking lot behind the brick building to your right. If you see the 2 granite trail posts, your off to a good start. After parking, stand between the 2 Posts following the trail to the wooden walkway. Follow the walkway to the end then walk 55 casual steps. You should see a wooden bench on your right. Go sit on this bench. No reason to sit here other then to see the view. Now go back to the trail and keep heading up stream keeping the river to your right. Keep on walking, you will know your going the right way if you see a large bolder on your left. Keep walking and you well come to another wooden walkway. Take the first right on this walkway. Stop walking when the river is both in front of you and behind you. Turn left. Now look down for Snapping turtles, look up for Great blue Herons or look to your right for the trail you will be going down. Start walking keeping the river on your left. Walk to the end of the next wooden walkway. Standing at the end, walk 43 casual steps, you are allowed to sightsee as you count if you can do 2 things at once. Look to your left and walk to the wood railing. This is a great place to catch Smallmouth Bass. After taking a look around, stand so you are at the center of the railing and the river is to your back. Walk 15 steps, turn right, walk 12 steps then turn left looking into the woods. Now put your left foot in take your left foot out do the hokie pokie and turn yourself about. If you’re done dancing, look in front of you for a large tall tree. Look behind this tree slightly to it's left for another larger tree. Make sure nobody is watching, then look on the backside of this tree, move the stone at the base of this tree. Here rests the Smallmouth Bass Letterbox.
