BLACK CAP LETTERBOX
NORTH CONWAY, NH

** Note this box has been replaced as of 9/13/2008. Old box missing. New box in slightly different location. **

Your trail begins at the trailhead for Black Cap Mountain near North Conway, New Hampshire. Black Cap Mountain trail is found off Hurricane Mountain Road, which is located just north of North Conway on Route 16. The climb to the top is a 1.2 mile hike, with an elevation gain of 700 feet. It is a wonderful family hike, not too strenuous, but it is an uphill climb. We can usually make the top in 30-40 minutes.

(Please note that Hurricane Mountain Road is closed in the winter).

When you reach the top, locate the circle that marks the exact summit! Turn around and admire the view on all sides. You should be able to see Mount Washington, Kearsarge Mountain and Mt. Chocorua, among others.

Now, to find the letterbox, descend the steps at the southern corner of the summit. Set a path 200 degrees (southerly) and go approximately 45 paces to stand at the far side of the open, sandy area.

Turn ESE at approximately 120 degrees, and proceed about 21 paces to stand on a rocky area. Now face East and look for the large rock with a crescent moon gouge in it. Immediately to the right (as you face it) you will see a small evergreen with a triangular rock in front of it. Look between the rock and the tree to find your prize.

Please be sure to return box to its original location after stamping in.

Good luck.

Placed on July 30, 2001.

Note: we did not account for any declination from magnetic north.
