BearBugWillow Letterbox (near Upper Treman State Park)

The scenic/long route (closed in winter):
From Rte. 13 heading south out of Ithaca, turn right onto Rte. 327.
Immediately turn left into Lower Treman State Park.
Walk the Gorge Trail 2-1/4 miles to the top.
Just before you hit the Upper Treman parking lot, take a left at the wooden park map. Head up the South Trail.
Cross a small wooden bridge.
When you see a stretch of chain link fence on your left, leave the main trail, turning right onto a dirt trail. [In 10 paces, you will see a wooden sign that says “Service Road.”]
Up a ways, when a smaller trail veers left and up, stay straight on the Service Road.
The dirt road ends at a wooden barricade. Walk around the barricade and continue ahead.
In 10 paces, take the trail that enters the woods on the right. It is marked with white blazes.
Up a ways, after a series of single and double logs laying across the trail, the trail “Vs.” Either way is fine. The right trail swings out toward a cliff edge, offering a beautiful vista before rejoining the other trail.
Shortly after, the trail turns right and heads downhill. Follow the white blazes on the trees as you switchback down the hill.
About 3/4 of the way down, look for an uprooted tree several paces to the left of the trail. Its big clumpy root stump is crowned with a stone cairn.
At the base of this root stump, nestled among a pile of sleeping sticks, you will find the letterbox.
Know that it was placed with much love.

The short route (accessible all year):
From Rte. 13 heading south out of Ithaca, turn right onto Rte. 327. Pass the entrance to Lower Treman State Park. Go several miles, and then turn left into Upper Treman State Park.
In about 3/4 mile, (before you get to the fee kiosk), turn sharply right and up onto Woodard Road (gravel).
Wind uphill exactly 2/10ths of a mile.
Park on the side of the road near the wooden gate on the left. This is the Finger Lakes trailhead.
Walk a short while. Cross a wooden bridge over a beautiful stream.
Immediately after the bridge, there is a forested trail that heads to the left, while the path you are on continues straight. Take the forested trail to the left.
After a short flat section, the trail begins to head uphill in a series of switchbacks. About 1/4 of the way up, look for an uprooted tree several paces to the right of the trail. Its big clumpy root stump is crowned with a stone cairn.
At the base of this root stump, nestled among a pile of sleeping sticks, you will find the letterbox.
It was placed with a lot of love from this direction too.
