Dog Days of Summer lured me out to Sunny Brook State Park this morning so of course I had to leave another box there. I think it's two and a half miles round trip and should take an hour and a half. Not suitable for small children, the trail is very rocky in places.

This stamp was carved by Cody B Cleo.
Directions: On Rt. 4 west out of Torrington, turn right at the police station onto Winsted Road. Straight through the next light then turn left at the set of lights at the white church onto Newfield Road. At 2.4 miles you'll see a sign on the right, at a bridge pointing out the John Muir Trail. Just after the bridge on the left is the park entrance marked only by stone pillars and a no littering sign. Plenty of parking.

Head down the road past the yellow gate and turn into the woods on the right 65 steps before the cement bridge. There should be blue blazes on the pavement at this point. Cross over a wooden bridge to a nature trail sign high on a tree. This is a loop hike and you'll come back to this point at the end. For now continue straight on the blue trail, crossing another wooden bridge and then seeing a yellow trail coming in from the left. At the Y intersection orange goes right but stay on blue to the leftish. Continue on blue being careful of orange again going right (or straight?) You'll be mostly going uphill until almost the top where the trail takes a left turn and then heads downhill. You may notice an unmarked trail on the left leading to an open area. Keep walking and you'll see another path on the left leading to the same open area (you've been circling this area for awhile now) this trail is blazed yellow/blue. Stay straight on blue until you see a stump on the right just as the trail turns right. The fallen tree has a pretty good sized boulder near it's "top" and the treasure is at the base of a VERY tall snag in front of the boulder.

Rehide carefully etc. and continue on the blue trail passing a giant erradic on the right, crossing a stream on a rock bridge and then going sharply left. Another yellow trail goes left and then the trail will feel more open. At the Y go left staying on blue and coming to another yellow trail on the left with a field of boulders on right. After going down a steep hill start looking for a white trail on the left, this is our shortcut home. The white trail follows along the edge of a swamp and then crosses a bridge and goes to the right. After another wooden bridge the white trail connects to the blue, turn left going over two boardwalks and you're back to the nature sign, turn right back to your car.
Thanks for visiting.
