From the East (Boston)

Trail: Difficult
Clues: Easy
Walk in and turn right. Go up the stairs then follow the stones on your right till you locate the cement slab in the shape of the #9. Sit at the top of the 9. Look ahead and follow the path to the right. Walk down the trail till you find the round stone column with the bent pipe in the center. The pipe points to a stone on the column. Count that stone as 1; keep counting clockwise to the 10th stone. Now walk in the direction the 10 the stone points. As you follow the woodchip trail keep walking till you reach the post board with the little roof on it. Read it if you like then turn so it’s to your back. Look ahead and slightly to the left for the big fat old tree. Follow the paved path behind that tree. At the top of the hill stay right, walk towards the small tree stump then turn right. Walk to the bottom of the hill. STOP when the paved path turns into dirt. Turn left and Walk 20 steps down the dirt path then STOP. You should see a small dirt trail on your left. Follow that trail; see if you can walk down the rectangle stones in the center of the trail staying to you LEFT all the way to the bottom of the hill till you reach a large flat stone. Stop when you see the large stone with the flat top to your left. Now stand on that flat stone with the path in front of you. Take 4 steps ahead back to path and turn left. Now take 5 steps and look to your right for a small trail. Follow this trail to the base of the hill to the large tree that’s looks like a Y. Turn left, walk ahead 6 steps so you are between two large trees. Walk ahead counting 4 large trees on your left, close enough to the path you can touch as you walk by. Stop when you reach the large V shaped tree. Look between the tree trunks out over the river. From here you could see a White Egret hunting for fish and frogs in the weeds or even a mink swimming around in the morning. Keep heading down the trail till you reach all the exposed tree roots on the steep hill. Be very careful and cross over till you reach the chain link fence ahead of you. Stand in the opening of the fence with the large tree to your left and the river to your right. Walk ahead following the slight trail in front of you. Use the roots like steps as you walk up to the bench at the top of the hill. Sit on the bench facing the river. Give yourself a pat on the back for making it this far and enjoy the view. From here you almost forget you’re in the city. This bench is dedicated to “In loving Memory of Nina Melbin”. I know this because It used to be carved on the backside of the bench. Before you check, look over your left shoulder for a square stone marker on the ground. Follow that path passing by 2 more square stones along the way, stay RIGHT heading all the way down the hill, stay on the trail that passes a flat stone on your left along the way. Once at the bottom of the hill, keep walking as you look up to your left till you find the large tree with the big old broken light about 30 ft high. Stand beside the light and follow the trail ahead to the right till you reach the large tree in the center of the trail. From this tree, follow the trees on your right around the contour of the land ahead. Keep walking till you reach the small dirt trial going behind the hill. Stop at the large fallen tree lying in the water. Turn so the river is to your back. You will see a hole in the trees base to your left. I have seen raccoon tracks in the snow here but no sightings yet. Now look up the hill and sit on the bench to the left. From this location is where I took the photo used to make the stamp for this letterbox. The coyote was trotting along the thin ice during a very cold winter day. I got as close as I could and snapped a few photos. Ok now look behind you for the bent tree. As you walk to the bent tree let out a coyote howl just for the heck of it. Then stand with the bent tree to your right. Now look to your left and walk to the 2nd tree it’s about 10 steps and turn right. If you are in the right spot you should see a black railing off to your right. Stay right where you are till you locate the trees that appear to be large white X. It's there keep looking. Walk to this large white X then take 15 steps ahead to the next large tree. From this tree hop 5 times ahead, turn right. Look around to make sure your coyote howl wasn’t a mating call, also make sure nobody is watching you. Looking at the stone wall in front of you look for a large light colored stone on the top and a smaller white looking stone below. Behind the white stone and a few other small stones rest the Coyote Letterbox. Good luck finding your way back.
