***The River Wins - Spring 2014.***
White Pine Letterbox
This letterbox is located near the Coeur d'Alene River. You will need to travel along I-90 to the town of Cataldo. Take exit 40 and turn North. It will be just a quick journey down this road until you meet Canyon Road. Turn west on Canyon Road and drive to the metal bridge that goes over the river. There is a wide shoulder on the east side of this bridge, it would be a good place to park. From the parking area you should take 97 steps ( 255 feet from the last cement barrier) along the dike made of large rocks heading north. Stop after the distance is covered and turn to 295 degrees. You should see two large boulders and a White pine with a crooked trunk just down the dike's bank. There is a large burnt log a little beyond this White pine. This burnt log is to far. The letterbox is at the base of this crooked White pine.
***The crook is hard to see now days. However, This is the only White Pine in the area! So should be easy to spot if you know your trees.
It is about 20 steps down to the crooked White Pine from the top of the dike. Please use caution scrambling down the dike to the tree it is very rocky here.
