Distance: ½ mile RT
Difficulty: very easy

Background
One of Arizona State Parks’ newest additions is also its most spectacular. Kartchner Caverns are a wonder to behold – called a “show cave” because of the amazing variety of formations found within, it is also a “living cave”, wet and still growing. Great care has been taken to keep it so, therefore visitors are limited to a maximum of 500 per day. There are two different tours available and both are well worth the price of admission. For reservations, call 520-586-CAVE. For more information, check out their website at www.pr.state.az.us/Parks/parkhtml/kartchner.html

To the Trailhead
From Interstate 10, take Route 90 (exit 302) south for 8.9 miles to the entrance for Kartchner Caverns State Park. There is a fee to enter, unless you have a letter confirming your tour reservation. Continue on the main driveway, past the Discovery Center and campground, to the trailhead parking lot at the end of the paved road.

To the Box
Take the trail to the right of the restrooms until you come to a fence near the windmill. Continue through the gate, on the Guindani Trail, for another 30 paces where you’ll see a trail heading off at 160* from north. Take that trail for 40 paces. In front of you to the left is a fire ring and log seats, in front to the right is a road crossing a wash. Walk to the edge of the wash and find the dirt clearing on your right. There is a barrel cactus on the south side of the clearing and at the NW corner is a large flat-faced rock that looks like a fat “1” under a mesquite tree. The letterbox is under the left side of the rock in its own little cave.
