Maine Wildflower Series
A Natural Rainbow Garden

This series has been RETIRED.

Note: There are 7 boxes in this series. Each box has 2 stamps. There are no ink pads in any boxes. You must have the following colors: A white or gray shade, pink, red, yellow, orange, brown, green, blue, purple, or multiple shades of each. In each box there is information regarding each native wildflower. Learn about your surrounding as you go. The boxes are spread out over 3 miles but the trail is flat and straight. If you don't do your research ahead of time you will have to go back the way you came making in a very long hike. My hint is take a friend and park one car at the other end of the trail.

P.S. Wear bug spray! Rehide these boxes well this is a well traveled path.

Directions: These boxes have been placed on the Bridle Path in Kennebunk. The Bridle Path (or at least this series) starts at the Sea Road School on Sea Road. Please do not attempt this box during school hours if you plan to park here. As you pull into the school there is a small path to the right and to the left. You will be taking the one to the left (the right path is very short and ends at railroad tracks).

Box 1: White (oxeye daisy & queen anne's lace)

As you head down this trail, you will come to a public way sign on your left (the sign is no longer there. Look for a pink colored house in the woods on the left). You can see a double set of birches up ahead on the right the box is not that far. There is a double set of trees about 10 steps off the path slightly before the birchs. Look at the base of this tree for your flowers.

Box 2: Pink (lady slipper & lady's thumb)
A few more feet ahead on the trail you will see a smaller trail off to the right. Take that trail. At the fork bear left. Go down to the knoll overlooking the river. Check inside the fallen tree.

Box 3: Red (northern pitcher plant & wild columbine)
Take the right trail to get back to the Bridle Path. You will cross a road in a development. Keep forward on the path. After crossing the road and heading back into the woods you will need to take the first smaller trail on the right. Go to the end to see the marsh. Find a broken dead stumpy looking tree in front of you. At that tree go look north. Due north from that tree you will see another dead tree (3 actually) one is missing the bark and one is wrapped around another. Go to the base (a fallen tree might be in your way) to find more pieces of your garden. Find your way back to the Path.

Box 4: Orange (day lily & orange hawkweed)
You will then cross a second development. You should see a white fence with a private property sign on it. Keep on the Path (don't worry you are not on private property). After reentering the woods after this road there will be a trail on the right that goes slightly up hill. At the top of the hill look at the spectacular view of the river. Now look back toward the path. A few steps down the hill is a fallen tree. Look in/under the fallen log for your find.

Box 5: Yellow (black-eyed susan & bulbous buttercup)
You will soon pass over a culvert connecting marshes and a few national wildlife refuge signs. There will be another path on the right up an ever so slight incline. Follow this path to a wooden overlook. Follow the path past the overlook. At a point in the path that looks like it might have been a stream you will see a multi branched tree on the right. On the back side reach up into the tree into the hole. Wildflowers reside here. Keep going to get back to the path.

Box 6: Blue (bluets & chicory)
Back on the path and you are coming to the end. You will soon reach the place where the path crosses Route 9 between Kennebunkport and Wells. On the left you will see a transformer surrounded by a chain link fence. In the center of the first bushy tree on the corner of the fence lies your next box.

Box 7: Purple (blue flag & common blue violet)
Cross Route 9 and head down the path into the marsh. Cross over the entire marsh and head into the woods. You will pass a few signs saying this is the property of Kennebunk Land Trust. At the small beige rectangular sign take 50 steps. On your left is a brown house with a cast iron tree on the wall and on your right is a tree with a fallen tree resting next to it. Lean over the fallen tree and check underneath. Here you should find your last box.

Hope you have enjoyed the trek.
