Probably the most controversial building in Boston, the new Boston City Hall was built in 1968 to designs by the Boston firm of Kallman, McKinnell and Knowles. Its asymmetrical concrete structure is considered “Brutalist” in style – referring to its massing and raw abstract monumentality. Bostonians generally consider it crap. Oh well.

This letterboxer happens to like it, so she’s put a box in to celebrate it! City Hall is open between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. in weekdays only. Enter from the Plaza side (which is also the 3rd Floor of the building). Pass through security and immediately turn left. Pass the information desk to your right and go through a set of doors ahead of you where there is an art gallery.

Walk straight across this narrow mezzanine area to the escalators and go down TWO flights of escalators to the second floor. There take a hard left and walk down a set of 7 or 8 steps walking straight toward glass doors that exit the building. Before those doors, take another hard left and walk toward the City of Boston Credit Union, but don’t go in. Instead, take an immediate right to the Elevator bank. On your left will be a door marked C NORTH. Open the door (it’s a stairwell), and immediately in front of you on the wall opposite the door you are two panel doors: the upper one is glass and the one below is metal. Open the metal one and reach down directly at the mid point of the panel opening closest to the door. There you will find your letter box.

Be extra careful that you are not seen!
