Directions: In south Seaside turn west on Avenue U (last stoplight before leaving town). Just before reaching the beach turn left on Beach Drive. Turn right when it ends. Follow this until you reach the public parking/viewpoint/surfer area. You are now on Sunset Boulevard. Keep driving up the hill until it deadends at the trailhead for the Tillamook Head Trail.

This area can be muddy if there's been recent rainfall and buggy other times. Be prepared. A tree ID book may help you but is not vital.

From the parking lot you will see condos on your right, the trail entrance with a huge sign on posts on the left, and an old logging road on its right, barely noticeable. The trailhead entrance and information area are bordered by a log fence; enter the fenced area and walk around the right side of the bulletin board to get to the logging road, which is gravel and unused.

THIS BOX IS IN A SPECTACULAR SPOT BUT ON A LESS-TRAVELED TRAIL SO BE PATIENT AND LISTEN TO YOUR GUT -- THE BOX IS ONLY A 10 MINUTE WALK FROM THE PARKING LOT, BUT NOT IN A COMMON AREA.
(NOTE: we re-worked these clues October 2007, frequent blow downs and lush undergrowth make some clues variable year to year. 23 finders so far so don't give up -- it's there!)

CLUES;

Walk up the logging road for several hundred yards, until you pass a long cut bank on the right. Keep your eyes peeled for a rusty half-buried drainage pipe on the right side of the road, it's not obvious, you must look for it. When you find it look up the road about 30 more paces on the right at about 236 degrees. You'll see a skinny tree on the edge of the road with a 2-foot skinny stump to its right. You'll see the skinny tree leans at 30 degree angle to to its side you'll see a lightly traveled trail beyond.Take it.

From this spot bear 290 degrees up a small hill to the two-headed monster with one broken arm. You'll have to zig right, then left along a trail to get there. Stand on its west side and head due north, up a slight rise (where a blown down tree crosses the trail) and down again past a widening in the trail. A tall narrow tree lying on its side points the way. Continue on the trail past an Octopus tree that bears a poisonous name.

Follow your nose -- and the trail -- magnetic north to the seacliff. At a slight Y in the trail stay uphill. A beautiful view of a crescent shore awaits you, as well as a birds-eye view of the roofs of the condos you parked near.

Turn your back to the sea. You should see a "state park boundary' sign on a nearby tree, walk to its base. Bear 180 degrees to a crooked clergyman. Walk under his fallen arm to find a crafty crevice under the tail of his robes that hides the box.It is deep within the duff.

Watch yourself on the viewpoint edge, the cliff's edge is heavy with undergrowth so tred carefully.
