The Massachusetts State House (a.k.a. Codfish) Letterbox

The current Massachusetts State House is located on Beacon Hill in Boston and was built in 1795 according to plans made by Charles Bulfinch. It has grown over the years and contains many beautiful and historic public spaces. The building is open weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and there are tours available between 10 and 4 most days if you’d like to learn more. It is free to enter. You can also go to http://www.sec.state.ma.us/trs/trsidx.htm to learn more about the building and what goes on there.

To find the Massachusetts State House Letterbox, enter the State House from Beacon Street. Your bags will be checked and run through a metal detector (as will you). When you pass through, take an immediate left and you will walk by the State House Bookstore on your right (worth a short visit). Continue on down that corridor until you come to the first elevator bank on your left (it’s actually facing the direction you are walking, so don’t miss it! These is the East wing elevators. Take the elevator to the 3rd Floor.

When you disembark on the 3rd floor, the Senate Presidents Office will be on your left. Take a peak and then walk straight ahead with the elegant marble hall to your right. This is Nurses Hall. On your left you will come to the Governor’s office. Take a peak, but otherwise take a right there, keeping Nurses Hall on your right. Walk down the very long corridor – past various representatives offices. You will arrive at the House of Representatives chamber. If it is open, walk in. It’s a beautiful room. From the floor you can glance up and see the famous CODFISH over the visitor’s gallery. It hung in the Old State House once and symbolizes the economic prosperity of the Commonwealth long ago when it depended a lot of the fish for food and trade.

If the House is in session, use the nearby staircase to go up to the 4th Floor and watch proceedings from the visitors gallery. Either way, proceed up to the 4th floor. At the top of the stairs turn left and walk away from the visitor’s gallery and then turn right and follow the long corridor to the end. You will be at the stairs and elevator of the East Wing of the 4th Floor and the last room on your right before reaching the elevator will be Room 428 (marked Legislative Documents Division). With your back to the elevators, look to your left and see two old-time telephone booths. VERY CAREFULLY, SO AS NOT TO BE SEEN, reach down behind the right booth (the one closest to the elevator and stairs), and your LETTERBOX will be on the floor, just behind the booth. Be equally CAREFUL putting it back! Might be a good idea to exchange your stamps in the telephone booth.

When you are done, you can keep touring around or take the East Wing elevator to the first floor and retrace your steps to the entrance/exit.
