Happy Hiker Box #1

You will be exploring beautiful Brush Creek, OH while searching for our Happy Hiker series of Letter Boxes. There is a link to a map of the area (on our website), which you will certainly need, as this is a quite remote location. From Twp. Rd. 289, turn right on Twp. Rd. 290, going down a very bumpy, gravely and winding hill. You will come to a bridge in 0.8 miles. Turn right, heading into Brush Creek Area 1. This is also a very rough gravel and dirt road so be careful! Head this direction, which follows Brush Creek downstream, for 1.2 miles. Watch for a pull off spot on the right. This is the road to the cemetary. Continue on, passing this spot up, for another 0.4 miles. On the right, you will see a small parking spot (or large pull off) by the creek. There is a small but lovely waterfall and a huge shelf of flat stone which you can wade onto. On the other side of this creek are some rather old hemlock trees and more flat rocks. This is a wonderful place to cool off in the water or relax on the cool rocks. We call this are "The Falls". If you head downstream about 40-50 yards from the Falls, you will find our first letter box. Be very careful, as the rocks on the creek bed are very smooth and flat, which means they can be ultra slick in any random spot. There are shallow and semi deep spots, never going more than maybe 28 inches deep. Heading downstream, watch for the bank on your right side to begin to level off. There will be a much smaller but very distinct secondary waterfall. Standing at the top of this tiny waterfall, look to your right for a large White Oak, maybe 12 feet into the woods from the creek shore. You will find the letter box in this trees hallowed out trunk.

Happy Hiker Box #2

Beging at the Falls, you can easily find the trinket stash letter box!
If you are ready to play against the creeks current, head back up the creek about 0.5 miles. Along the way, you will walk in the creek, which is running close to, but hidden from the road. You may take the road if you wish and save just about 0.1 miles, if it matters. Heading up the creek, be careful not to slip on the smooth, flat creek bottom. Halfway point of the trip is a spot where the Wildlife Office has dumped large boulders of limestone, to stop the erosion of the road. This has made a dozen new homes for wildlife, even though Brush Creek has plenty. Continue on until you approach a place in the creek where there a small pull off spot from the road on the right, or a larger sized path to the left. Follow the path on the left until the trail splits again. You may take either way, but the easiest path is the path going uphill to the right. As you crest the hill you will find a large clearing. This is a very old family cemetary. Some graves are as old as 1838. Please respect this area. Enjoy the beautiful Cedar tree in the center. If you head back to the path you came from, follow it the remaining few feet past the cemetary until the "no vehicles beyond this point" sign. A few feet from the tree where this sign is posted, you will see a double Ironwood tree. Dig in the leaves beneath the tree to find the trinket stash! Take a trinket, leave a trinket!
