Oct. 08 - These boxes have been pulled by park staff and are no longer available
Like every other state, Minnesota has an official state bird. But there's an unofficial state bird as well. We all know what that is, right? If you'd like to add these two critters to your logbook, then these are the letterboxes for you.
William O'Brien State Park
Just south of Scandia off of Highway 95
Once you enter the state park, grab a map and make your way to the Amphitheater. You'll want to pick up the Riverside Trail just beyond this seating area. Head to the left. You'll know you're on the right track if you pass a blue diamond numbered 21, an Ice Age Visitor, and the Sentinels of the Saint Croix.
Box 1 - "Official"
You'll be in the right spot when you find AUTUMN.
From there, take 11 steps due west to the big maple.
The box is tucked behind it, at the base.
Box 2 - "Un-official"
Once you spot a blue diamond with the number 19 on it, you'll want to keep your eyes open for a big, beautiful v-shaped birch tree. Standing on the path between this birch and a boulder, site a maple 10 paces off the path at 70 degrees. The box is at its base
Notes:
- If you don't have a park sticker, a day pass is $7
- Pets are allowed in the park as long as they're on a leash
- Bring your own pen and ink (recommend black and red markers)
- These boxes are too small for HHs
