NOTE TO ALL ADVENTURERS: This letterbox was first created for my son’s 11th birthday party! Instead of a hidden letterbox, there was a chest filled with goodies for all participants! His birthday party happened to fall on the rainiest JULY day in 2004! We have ten 10-12 year olds, it is teeming outdoors...should we go? Of course!

Upon arrival at Nolde’s Sawmill entrance, we noticed that the creek was over the banks and furious! We couldn’t follow the detailed directions unless we had life jackets, a sailing vessel, and a darn good insurance policy. (Who knew we may need a liability policy for a birthday party?) So, our route was impassable but knowing the park, we took another path on higher ground and hoped for the best! We trudged through the now-swampy woods in search of a prehidden treasure! Oh, there were a few skeptical adventurers in our crew in their ever-increasingly soggy clothes. They looked wildly at the raging waters. The maps were sodden and useless! We pushed on! Yes, we finally reached the treasure. In the end, the boys loved the treasure of goodies! But, a year later, that is not what they talk about.....they loved the outrageously drenching adventure at Nolde Forest!

It has been over a year since the deluge at Nolde and there are so many stories of that day! When we decided to place a letterbox where we once hid the treasure, how could we not name this letterbox: “Nick’s Soggy 11th Birthday”?

Enjoy!!!

Park at Nolde Forest’s Sawmill entrance!

1. With the benches at your back and facing the creek, take the SOUTH path to the steps.

2. Up the steps and down you go following the path WEST.

3. When you get to the MONSTER TREE AHEAD, venture SOUTH.

You’ll soon be walking through TALL PINES!
Then you will soon see a large tree down to the left!
Continue on the path!

4. You’ll pass benches on your left. STOP! Walk about 55 paces more along the path.

5. Then go SOUTHEAST over the bridge.

6. Then go SOUTHWEST along “BIG HOUSE” trail!

You’ll soon see BENCHES at your SOUTHEAST and a big log to the WEST.

7. You’ll reach a “Y” at another set of double benches. Bear right.

8. DON’T cross the bridge but veer left onto the “H2O-small house” trail. It’s curvy! It’s swampy! It’s adventurous! It’s FUN!

You’ll go over 3 wood plank bridges!
Soon you’ll pass the SIGNATURE TREES on your right!
Then follow the path over another wood plank crossing.
Continue as the path nears the creek again.

9. NOW: When you get to a tree that has fallen over the creek....STOP!

10. Take a few steps backward along the path and you will see a tree down to your left!

11. Go off-trail now and walk along the fallen tree SOUTHEAST to the crossbar of the "H".

12. Follow the crossbar of the "H" to the right 14 steps to a very big tree.

13. Next, walk around the tree.

14. Follow the "line" to where the "x" marks the spot!

15. This is where you will find the letterbox!

A pace is equal to each footfall. That is, L R L R L equals five paces.
Minimal off-path exploring but nonetheless, watch out for poison ivy, snakes, etc…!
In case of rain, re-read note above!
