The Seminole Indians of Florida waged the longest war ever fought in US history until Vietnam. They call themselves the Undefeated People because they never surrendered to Federal troops, but negotiated a peace treaty after 7 years of fighting. Some moved to western lands, and others chose to remain in what is now the Everglades. There are eight original clans with a number of related subclans.

Having burned the settlement of New Smyrna on December 25, 1835, the Seminoles moved northward. New Smyrna settlers who had escaped and taken refuge near Ponce Inlet were warned and hurried toward Ormond Beach where they were given military escort to St. Augustine. The newly built lighthouse at Ponce Inlet was ransacked, the lenses smashed, and the reflectors taken as souveniers before the building was torched. One Seminole warrior was seen sporting a lighthouse reflector as part of his war dress during a later battle. The current lighthouse was completed 50 years later.

Take Lighthouse Road toward the Marine Discovery Center. Just past it, find the entrance to the Nature Trail. Park in the small lot and take the paved trail into the forest. You will come to a wooden walkway leading to a two-story observation tower. Beside the third support post on the right, just beneath the walkway, find the Wind Clan box. (Nestled in the sand with a board covering it.) Stamp in on the breezy observation deck just down the path, then rehide the box very well on your way out, nestling it again in the sand. Continue left on the path to loop back to your car. A short, pleasant walk.
