***************
This box has been retired from Camp Tonkawa. Hurricane Rita took down the tree where the box was hidden. Luckily the box was saved. Its future has not been determined. 3/12/06

This is our first box to place. We have placed the box outside of Camp Tonkawa as it does cost to enter and swim but I can say it would be a great $5 spent. The water is cold and the rope swing is a big hit in my family. Mornings and early afternoon are best for families as the crowds get a little rowdy after that. Here is the history about this fun place.

In the 1800’s the 50 acres of Camp Tonkawa was in a land grant to a full blood Indian, as well as the 300 acres that surround it. In the early 1900’s Camp Tonkawa was called Acre Mill Pond. It was a grist mill and the spring powered the wheel. During this time period the Tucker family purchased the property and has owned it ever since.

In the 1930’s the Boy Scouts leased the land from Dr. Tucker and developed the natural rock walls around the spring. The work was done by the C.C.C. The Boy Scouts hired Jess Case as caretaker. He and others in the community made a living working for the Boy Scouts. The Boy Scouts were a major employer for the people in the community during this time.

When the Boy Scouts left during the 1960’s the Texas State Fox and Wolf Hunters leased the property for their hunts. Fox hounds were swapped, sold and bartered. The fox hunters left in the early 1970’s.

In the late 1980’s Ozarka Water Company leased the water rights on the property, moving out after a number of years. Then, for many years Camp Tonkawa sat vacant. The family found it impossible to keep people out of the water. People found the pond no matter what the family did to discourage trespassing. The lure of that cold, clear water was just too great! On June 1, 2001 Camp Tonkawa was reopened. The water is ice cold and so clean you can see the clear white sand bottom.

DIRECTIONS: From Nacogdoches, take 59 north. Continue on north 259. Approx. 12 miles from Nacogdoches, you will turn right onto CR 1087. (There is a Camp Tonkawa sign there plus a large cell phone type tower). Then you go 4.5 miles down this road until you come to CR 153. You will turn right again and you will see Camp Tonkawa from here. Be careful once you turn onto CR 153, apparently there is some type of industry down this road and the 18-wheelers go way too fast.

From Mt Enterprise, take 259 south about 5 miles and turn left onto 1087.

CLUES: Drive past the entrance of Camp Tonkawa. The road makes a Y - continue on the right side. (The big trucks take the left) The road turns to the right as you follow the fence line around the camp. Once you turn the corner, you will see old chicken houses on the left side of the road. In front of these is a cluster of trees along side the road. There are 3 pine trees and then a small multi-trunked tree. The camo box is in the bottom part of the tree in between the many trunks. The fence along side of it appeared to be an electric one so please don't touch it! Enjoy and rehide well. Now you must go back to Camp Tonkawa and take a swim!!
