The Deschutes is considered a world class fly fishing water and though it’s 252 mile length is heavily fished only 7 miles north of Crane Prairie Reservoir can truly be considered wild and free flowing. This letterbox search will not show you the small stream meandering through the conifer and pine forest, but instead show you the true headwaters that are caused by underground springs. To see the stream you will have to look a few miles south of the letterbox location.

Clues:

Start your search at the public boat ramp at the lake that has no “little” in its name. This lake has the same name as a gritty bar of soap. Park where you can without blocking the ramp and locate the proper signage for the trail. Head east from the ramp and do not take the first left turn, but do take the left turn shortly there after that will head towards Edison Sno-Park. (For a slightly longer hike you can start at Edison Sno-Park and head westerly for 8 miles.) As you are heading east count 62 steps after you first see another lake from this trail. At the end of 62 steps you should have a large log lying along the right side of the trail, and the length of this log is over 14 steps along the trail. The trail will take a very definite left turn to the north at this log. At the western, root end of this log look for 3 large bar of soap rocks approximately 3 feet south east from the root end and slightly higher than the log. The letterbox, camo in color, can be found in the middle of these three rocks under some smaller similar movable rocks. After stamping in enjoy the view of the headwaters or better yet go wet a line.

When researching our clues please be aware that when previous searchers list “ATTEMPTED” on the clue sheets it may reflect more on their abilities as finders than indicate whether the box is viable or not. We do monitor our clues and boxes pretty well and appreciate the notes written to us by those that find or attempt our letterboxes.

Please contact placer directly or through the LBNA chat list regarding status rather than unofficial databases.
