This is my second series on the Pacific Crest Trail. I had a week off work and rented a yurt at Olallie Lake, and spent my days exploring the local trail system. The PCT crosses the road just before the Olallie Lake store, where a sign says it is 2.5 miles to Upper Lake, so round trip is only 5 miles. Start there.

This hike is fairly flat and a bit rocky sometimes, but an easy trail overall.

Who? Box #1. When you pass a shallow pond on your right, you will come to a viewpoint of Mt. Jefferson at 165 and Olallie Lake at 105. Look for the dead pine tree with a 4' rock in front of it, with a peice of pie sliced from it. The hikers arrow has "west" scratched in it. Stand on the rock. Head 0 degrees 10 steps to behind a rotted log and a pile of flat stones. Underneath. 10/2011 box had its first visitor in August 2011. Still in excellent condition.

Cheep. Box #2. When you get to an intersection of trails, you will continue forward on the PCT toward Upper Lake. From the low rock in the middle of the intersection, count 48 steps to the end of a log on your right. Walk up the log to the bent tree. Behind it under rocks is the box. 10/2011 box still in excellent condition.

Chirp. Box #3. The trail will split, with no sign. By my map the left fork loops down to Top Lake. The right fork is the PCT and goes a bit uphill, placing you next to Cigar Lake almost immediately. Find the Cigar Lake sign. At 140 degrees, ten steps over a log and around a bent tree to a skinny 20' tree with a 15 dead one to its left. Under the rock between the logs. 10/2011 Tried to find, but didnt have my clues. "Between the logs" appears to be collapsed now.

Squawk. Box #4. When you reach Upper Lake, I believe you are looking at an unnamed butte on your left, and one side of Double Peaks on your right. Admire the view and continue clockwise along the lake. As you pass under the rainbow, look to the base. Behind twins, under rocks, is Squawk. 8/2009 box in fine condition.

You can add the short hike to Double Peaks (sold separately, some scrambling required) near Cigar Lake, if you'd like a longer hike.

Enjoy!
