The Jack and Jill letterboxes are the first in a series of "Jack" letterboxes. Look in the future for "Jack in the Box", "Crackerjack", "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Jack be Nimble", "You don't know Jack", etc.
The Jack and Jill letterboxes are located in Wells State Park in Sturbridge, Ma. This park is located about 1 mile north of the intersection of Rt. 20 and Rt. 49 on Rt. 49. During the warm weather months it is accessible directly from Rt. 49. During the snowy months, you must turn onto Walker Pond Rd. off of Rt. 49, follow it for .6 miles, turn right, you will still be on Walker Pond Rd., drive 1.5 miles to a T intersection, turn left and drive into the Wells State Park parking lot. There are several other letterboxes in this park.
Wells State Park has camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, bike riding, picknicking and more. There is a $2 fee during the warm weather months.
This walk is about a mile and a half round trip on a steep trail. It is not difficult, but be careful. The overlook is dangerous for children and pets.
From the parking lot, pass the gate, and turn right on the paved road towards the Mill Pond Trail and the Carpenters Rock Trail. Walk past the entrance to the Accessible Mill Pond Trail. At the next intersection go straight onto the yellow and red trails.
Jack and Jill went up a hill
To see a wondrous sight
At the first Y intersection go right, staying on the red and yellow trails.
At the next Y intersection (comes quickly), go left on the yellow and white trail. Ignore the next trail on the left. You will come to an intersection with a large rock enscarpment on the right. The trail splits here. At the tree with 2 yellow and one white square, stop.
Jill stopped to rest awhile
She was afraid of the height
Take a reading at this tree of due North. Walk 22 paces in this direction to a large rock with a gap at the bottom. Jill waits for Jack in this gap under a rock and some sticks. After stamping in, return to the tree. Follow the yellow trail to the left. You will reach the vista in a very short while. Watch yourself here. If you have a pet or children with you, hang onto them. Enjoy the view.
Jack pressed on to the peak
It gave him such a fright
After enjoying the view, note the lone pine tree which is just over the edge of the dropoff. Facing this tree take a reading of 290 degrees. (this will be over your left shoulder). Follow the trail at this reading for 25 to 30 paces. Look to your left for a 5 sister oak tree, 12 paces off the trail to the left.
Jack fell back, his knees weak
And stayed until the night.
You will find Jack in this five sister tree under some sticks and bark. Recover carefully. Return the way you came. Hope you enjoyed the walk and the view.
