Take Rt.6 east out of Orleans, MA. Look for signs on your
right (east) directing to Fort Hill Area. This is the south
end of the town of Eastham.

Turn right at Fort Hill Area. On your right you will pass the Edward Penniman house. Captain Penniman was a whaler who worked out of New Bedford, but returned to his hometown in 1868 to build this beautiful house with the mansard roof. Be sure to notice the magnificent whale jawbone that creates a gateway to the front yard.

Just past the Penniman House on your left is a small parking lot. Park here and you will see the trailhead on the far side with a trail map box.

As you start up the trail you will pass a small rock marker on your right with a "T". You will pass through a group of trees on either side of the trail (a rarity on this mostly open meadow path--wear a hat!). Continue straight on this trail until you see the turn off on the left to Red Maple Swamp. Take this turnoff and take 20 paces. On your right you will see a broken rail fence. Turn right here onto a footpath. You'll come to another rail fence with a small grove of junipers just before it on your left. Take this small path to the left into the trees.

On your right you'll see a small oak among the evergreens. The box is covered with needles and leaves at the base of this oak on the north (right) side. It contains a handmade stamp, ink pad and log book. Please reseal carefully, replace under the correct tree and re-cover with needles.

NOTE: In July when placed, there were lots of deer flies! Ick! Since then others have reported flies, others none. Try a cooler time of year for this box.

You can either continue along the Fort Hill trail to Fort Hill Box #1 (placed by TEAM Wood--family!)

[UPDATE 11/05 - Fort Hill Box #1 is missing. May be replaced soon or maybe not until next summer]

or go back to your car and drive to the next parking lot up the hill for the wonderful view of Nauset Marsh. You can get to the other Fort Hill box from there, as well.
