REPORTED MISSING 4/15/2006
Difficulty: Easy, park and find
This letterbox is located outside the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, which is on the southwest side of downtown Brenham next to the railroad tracks. The address is 314 S. Austin. The closest cross-street is Commerce.
Every spring, starting in late February or early March, the Washington County Chamber of Commerce starts a running commentary about wildflowers in the area. The Wildflower Watch, which can be found on the Chamber's website at http://www.brenhamtexas.com, tells where to view the best wildflower displays each year. The Chamber can also give you a wildflower trails guide. If you travel to Brenham for the wildflowers in spring, this is a good place to start. If you travel to Brenham at other times, you can learn about places to visit in the area that may not yet have letterboxes.
Clues:
Park anywhere in downtown Brenham or at the Chamber. If you park in downtown, you will have a pleasant stroll to the letterbox, weather permitting, although you will have to cross S. Austin which is a busy street. There are also several parking spaces on either side of the Chamber building. Go inside the Chamber and say "hi," to the friendly Texas folks. Ask any pertinent questions about Washington County, get a map, or gather brochures. As you leave the Chamber building, turn left. Follow the sidewalk to the corner of the building (~10 ft) and turn left again. There should be a big rock on your right. Go about ten paces until the landscaping on the right ends. Turn right on the grass and follow the edge of the landscaping for 5 paces (I'm short, so you may have to adjust accordingly). The small, camo-taped letterbox is hidden among the ornamental grasses about a foot from the edge at this place. Please re-place well, as low to the ground as possible.
Quetzel's letterbox, We All Scream for Ice Cream!, is not far, if you'd like more of a walk.
I would love to get an e-mail on the status of the letterbox:
