Warning these letterboxes are not for average letterboxers! The Kern River has a record of many fatalities. Check the sign at the entrance to the canyon as you come in from Bakersfield for the latest statistics. Do not attempt these unless you are a COMPETENT whitewater boater. We have not indicated the location of the boxes except to those that know the river. If you are taking a commercial raft trip on the Kern you can ask your guide about these locations and ask if he will stop at them. If you figure out the locations of the boxes and think you might swim over to them think again. The letterboxes are not worth risking your life over. This section of river is class 4 at normal water flows and class 5 at higher flows.
There are plenty of regular letterboxes in the area, so please go look for them if you are not a boater.

Clues: Always look on river right.

#1 Alligator Rock
The Gator has chewed up many a boater!

#2 Joe’s Diner
Where you might get your lunch, or be served as the meal.

#3 Betty’s Bakery
If you haven't gotten your fill at Joe's Diner then you can get your just deserts here.
Below Joe’s Diner pull over to a pebbly beach that is just above the curve leading into Betty’s Bakery. The letterbox is hidden on the backside of the second crevice from the curve in the river, in the three peaky rocks that will be slightly to your left if you land at the beach as soon as you can. The peaks seem to be the same height as the road.

#4 Garbage Eddy
If you are not a boater and have not heeded our warnings this is where they will start the search for your body.
After Garbage Eddy pull over to the first pebbly beach. The Letterbox is hidden at the base of a large pine tree under movable rocks. The pine is located several steps away and near the cliff wall. This box could be flooded out at high water.

When researching our clues please be aware that when previous searchers list “ATTEMPTED” on the clue sheets it may reflect more on their abilities as finders than indicate whether the box is viable or not. We do monitor our clues and boxes pretty well and appreciate the notes written to us by those that find or attempt our letterboxes.
