DIFFICULTY: Easy walk on grass and gravel; busy park at certain times of the day

DISTANCE to LETTERBOX: approximately 350 yards

The Dragonfly is an insect belonging to the Order Odonata. It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body. Dragonflies typically eat mosquitoes, midges and other small insects like flies, bees, and butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams, and wetlands for the reason that their larvae (known as nymphs) are aquatic. Dragonflies do not bite or sting humans. In fact, they are valued as a predator that helps control the populations of insects that do, such as mosquitoes.

Damselflies are similar to dragonflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact their wings are held along the body when at rest. They are also usually smaller, and weaker fliers than dragonflies, and the eyes are separated.

Texas has approximately over 220 varieties of dragonflies and damselflies. Dallas County has approximately 70 varieties reported. For more information about dragonflies go to: http://odonatacentral.bfl.utexas.edu/

Directions: If heading east on I-20, take the Cedar Ridge Exit (#461). Go South on Cedar Ridge to Camp Wisdom. Go east on Camp Wisdom to Steger Drive. Go south on Steger Drive to park. If heading west on I-20, take the Main Street Exit (#462B). Go South on Main Street to Camp Wisdom. Go West on Camp Wisdom to Steger Drive (before Cedar Ridge). Go South on Steger Drive to park.

CLUES: Drive into Lakeside Park on Steger Drive. Parking spaces will be on your right. Park in the closest space near the handicapped parking, information sign and directly in front of the fountain. Walk south toward the information board. This info board explains about the various fish that are available in the lake. Continue in a southerly direction. You will pass several picnic tables and a dock on your right. Walk until you reach a gravel path. If you walk in the woods you’ve gone too far. Head west (right) on the gravel path keeping the pond on your right. As you walk by the lake see if you can spot a dragonfly. As the path turns to cement and slopes downward, stop at the base of the slope. Walk at a bearing of 150 degrees across the field toward the woods. Look for the first above-ground man hole at the edge of the woods. From the man hole walk 90 degrees to an old multi-trunk evergreen tree. At the base of its trunk the Dragonfly will be “flying” under some white rocks. Careful for the barbed wire, poison oak and burrs (in season). Please remember to hide it well after stamping as this is a busy park!
