The small town of Kyogle is situated on the edge of the Border Ranges National Park (Heritage listed for its rainforest content) on the Far North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. Kyogle has an urban population of 4,000 or more, and is easily accessible from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Ballina, and Tenterfield.

The Toonumbar National Park is not far from Kyogle, and camping, hiking and birdwatching are favoured activities here. For camping information call 02 6632 1473.

Extensive subtropical rainforests protect threatened plants and animals, including the sooty owl, red-legged pademelon and yellow-bellied glider. The rainforests of Dome Mountain and the Murray Scrub are part of the World Heritage-listed Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia. The rainforests are only one facet of this wild and intricate natural environment and you will be inspired by its rugged landscape.

From Kyogle, head east on Afterlee Road towards the Toonumbar National Park. Do not turn right into the Park access road, but continue on Afterlee Road for another 5kms or so until you reach the Toonumbar Flat. This open area of land has been a favoured recreation area for over 100 years. You will see a very old tennis court, a cricket pitch, and a lovely setting for weddings, family reunions, horse trail-riding camps, and a popular endurance riding base.

After parking, head down to the creek that flows alongside the Flat. This is truly a slice of Eden, and you will be able to wade in the shallow waters easily. Look for a small 'island' in the creek. This 'island' has a ridgeback, and is in the attached photo. Climb to the very highest point of the 'island' and look under a large rock for your letterbox. Be careful of the cows and the cowpats!
