12-31-10 - So sad to say after 5 years this one is missing. Hope to replace it the next time we are in East Texas.

The ‘Hippi’ box is dedicated to the very first animal at Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin, Texas. ‘Hippi’ was a hippopotamus. The story goes that Ellen Trout Zoo was founded in 1967, after Hippi the Hippo was given as a gift to Walter W. Trout. Hippi died of age related causes in 1997.
If you have never been to this zoo, it’s a nice treat. They opened a new hippo area several years ago and it is really nice. You are able to look into the tank from the side and see them swimming. There are now two hippos named Nakili and Pancho. These hippos are a riot. They teased and played with us the entire time we were watching them.
Directions: Ellen Trout Zoo is located in Lufkin, Texas. Please see their website for the best directions. http://www.ellentroutzoo.com We also found out that if you sign up for a family membership ($35) you can get in free in zoos all over the country. They also have a great train that takes you around the zoo and across the lake. The best $1 spent all day.
Clues: Once you have seen the hippos, continue on to the giraffes. From the 1st viewing area of the giraffes, go the last pole on the left side. Count 6 steps down the sidewalk. You will come to a tree on the left hand side of the sidewalk. The tree has a small downed log behind it. There is also a large palm tree several yards behind it. (if you come to the 2nd viewing area of the giraffes, then you have gone too far) The camo box is located in between the back of the tree and the log. It is covered with leaves and grass. There were also some prickly vines there. Please rehide carefully and let me know the status of this box.
