Between the towns of Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake, just south of Uppper Saranac Lake, lie Stony Creek Ponds and the settlement called Coreys; a very special place.

DIRECTIONS: Access is via Coreys Road. This also provides access to the Racquette River (via Axton), Stony Creek itself, northern High Peaks, horse trails and foot trails.

Follow Coreys Road until just past the first Stony Creek Pond. (From the road you get a nice view of this pond and Stony Creek Mountain; pause and enjoy the view.) Just past the pond, look for a DEC marker that denotes access to First Pond. You may park along the shoulder of the road.

A short walk down this path gives small boat access on a small sandy beach to First Stony Creek Pond, a true kettle hole pond. One can also swim here. Keep going along the path past the put-in. You will climb a steep hill. Just before you reach the top of the hill, stop in front of a paper birch and look about 210 degrees south (magnetic). You will see a large white pine about 12-14 paces away. Walk to this white pine. Place yourself right beside it and look about 300 degrees west. You will see a fallen log, approximately perpendicular to the path upon which you had been walking. That is where you will find what you are looking for!

From the top of the hill you can see a campsite on a peninsula between First and Second Stony Creek Ponds. If unoccupied, you can hike down to the campsite for another view of First Pond, a view of Second Pond and a shoulder of Stony Creek Mountain. You may see the High Peaks in the distance. Coreys abounds in wildlife common in the Adirondacks. Listen for loons on the pond and look for deer tracks near the pond. Enjoy this very special place.

Access to this box is also posible via water from the Racquette River and Stony Creek. Paddle up Stony Creek and through Third Pond, under the bridge into Second Pond. Head northwest and pass into First Pond. The take-out is in the west corner of this pond. Of course, if the campsite is vacant you may takeout there to reach the box. Don't forget to consult a map before you set out via water.
