Directions: Located behind Home Depot On the VFW Parkway in West Roxbury

Clue:

Millennium Park

Once in the parking lot, take the first right follow the sign that says “Fields A&B Parking. Drive to one of the very last parking spots at the far end near the brown sign with the map on it. Stand facing the map on the brown sign. You will see a path to the left of the map. Follow the path down the hill keeping the stones to your left. As you walk keep your eyes open for Red tailed Hawks and Turkey Vultures soaring above or Snakes resting on the warm stones. You will have a long walk till you reach a small black bridge on your right, so along your way take some time to stop and smell the flowers, just don’t sniff the ones with the bees. Here’s just a few of the flowers you may see along the way. Black-Eyed Susan, Purple Loosestrife, Oxeyed Daisy’s, Blue Flag, Yarrow and many other wildflowers that bloom at different times of the year. Once you locate the green bridge. Cross over the bridge and follow the trail to a small stone bridge. Under this bridge I found 3 Red fin Pickerels (fish) they were in basically a puddle and it was drying up fast. You can find photos at www.alongthecharles.com. Ok back to the trail. Stop when you see the path with a dirt hill to your left. Go up the first hill and then up to the second hill to the tree with the exposed roots to your left. Stand with that tree behind you. Look at the bottom of the hill in front of you. Locate 2 tree stumps. Stand between the two stumps. Take one step and turn left. Walk 20 steps. Take 3 steps on the trail on your left. You will see a tree stump on your left. Face that stump. Take one side step to your right. Take 4 steps up the small hill. Have a seat. I was sitting here one day when a Monarch Butterfly fluttered down landed on my knee when I looked up I saw 3 or 4 more. So I placed a bonus box here. Look under the stone covered with leaves and sticks on the hill. Below the stone you will find the”Monarch Butterfly”letterbox. Keep your eyes open as you stamp your book never know what you may see. When you’re done stamping in, make your way back to the black bridge and turn right. Follow the wooden railing on your right. Stop when you see the large, dead, creepy tree in the field to your right. You should also see a tan roof at the top of the hill to your left. Don’t worry you don’t have to walk up there. Just turn so your back is to the tan roof, look out over the field. If you’re lucky you could see the tops of a few White-tailed Deer in the tall grass feeding looking back at you. The best time to see this is dusk and dawn. Ok, now follow the wood railing to the end and turn right. Follow the trail into the woods. Keep walking as you follow the trail to the left. You should now see the Charles River on your right. As you walk you will pass by two large square stone slab with some designs on it to your right. I’m not sure why or how they got there but I thought I would point them out anyways. Keep walking till you reach the paved path and stay right. Walk to the green bench and turn right. Walk ahead to the steps. This is a great spot to launch a kayak or canoe. It’s also used for a dog launch. So beware of the happy wet dog looking to jump on you to say hello. Go back up the path to the green bench and turn right. Follow the path past the brown sign with the map on it. Walk till the trail splits and go left up the S shaped hill. Stop at the top when the trail splits. The Trail looks like a large letter “A”. Stand at the base of the “A” with a sign to your right. Now look to your left. Locate the last post of the black fence. Walk up the grass to the end of the first black fence. Stand on the paved path with the end of the fence in front of you. To your left you can see Key Span, Behind Key Span off in the distance you can see the path cut in the trees for skiing at the Blue Hills. To your right you can see the Charles River. Behind you over your right shoulder you can see 10 antennas. Behind you over your left shoulder locate the American flag behind the trees. Walk to that flag Pole and stop in front of the stone. Standing in front of the stone, you can see Boston in the distance if it’s a nice day. Follow the trail to the right towards the red brick building. Go across the cross walk and down the steps. Turn left and start walking. You will now walk to the next trail on your left, but as you walk you will see a ditch on your right that holds the rain water from the surrounding park. This ditch is loaded with wildlife; it’s one of my favorite areas for all types of birds, reptiles Amphibians, Flowers and of course insects. As you walk slowly keep your eyes open for Dragonflies. I took the photo of the Twelve Spotted Dragonfly resting on some grass at the edge of this ditch. There are soooo many different types of dragonflies in this one small area it was hard to choose. Once you locate the trail on you’re your left, stop. Again, the trail looks like the letter “A” this time stand at the top of the “A”. To your right you should see a birdhouse. Turn left and take one step. Turn left and walk up to the top of the hill. At the top of the hill turn left. Take 15 steps. Turn right. Walk along the curb until you see the sign on the ground with a fish on it. You will see some trees to your left. Make sure nobody is behind you watching. Look under the slate stone covered with grass to reveal the Twelve Spotted Dragonfly. Don't forget to cover it back up when you are done, please! Have fun walking back to your car.
