This box has now been REPLANTED 10/9/06 in a brand spanking new spot.
DIFFICULTY: 2, for the need to accurately count a lot of steps.
TERRAIN: Easy
TIME: 10 minutes, 45 minutes with children
STAMP: Handcarved
CHILDREN: It's a playground
This is the first in a series of letterboxes that are placed at playgrounds in Salem, although this one is now just NEAR the playground.
One word of WARNING: Beware the wildlife. A group of letterboxers were berated once by an older neighbor lady who suspected them as drug dealers, even though they had a couple of little ones.
PICKMAN/JACKMAN PARK LETTERBOX
Find the playground that is surrounded by Presidents of the United States. Of particular interest is Monroe, our 5th President, and another is our 16th President.
Standing at the sign to the park, notice the big red circle off in the back. It spins. It is one of the old fashion, death by spinning or flying off, merry-go-rounds. And it is well greased and can spin enough to get my kids sick. awesome. If you are an adult, you can last about 4 rotations before you begin to feel nauseous. If your are one-sick-puppy, give the wheel a ride and record the number of rotations before you felt sick in the logbook of this letterbox.
Well, let's start over. Standing at the sign to the entrance to the park, walk NE across the "bridge" with the white railings. Go to the second to the last white poles of the railing on your right and count how many steps it took you to get the next pole. It took me three.
Fourteen steps to the left you will see a slightly hidden gravel path that runs along the outside and below the fenced in ball field. Look to your right at the entrance to this path and spot the big, ugly, green, electric box by the fence. From here, count off (what I counted as) 84 steps.
Now, if you were accurate (because I know I AM :), you should have followed the curve of the path around to the right, as it borders a vast marsh field. And if you look down and to your right. Just one step off the path you MAY find a small pile of rocks. Look here for the box. If you don't, then YOU were WRONG in counting, and you just have to look around in the area for this pile of rocks. It shouldn't be more than a few steps away. Remember, it is on your right, not the left.
Good luck, and rehide well but not so well that the next person can't find the pile of rocks.
