This is an Easy hike through the refuge. Approx: 2 miles. Directions: Take Route 102 going north, best reached from Route 4 north or south. Turn right onto Widow Sweets Road (just after the Exeter's Town Clerk's Office and across from Anderson's Quality Furniture store). Take second right onto Pardon Joslin Road (a dirt road). Travel approximately 1 mile. Parking lot is on the right side of road.

From the parking lot enter the trail to the left of the shelter, through two large rocks. This is called Split Rock Trail. Follow this trail until you come to a break in a wall. Look to the uphill side of the wall on the left and you’ll see where the wall picks up. In a hole on top of the wall you will find “Count Dracula Jr.”

Go back to the main path and continue downhill headed south. Take a break at the bench. But BE CAREFUL … Who knows what may be lurking around the boulder just over your shoulder? Next, cross the wooden bridge. From there take about 32 paces on the main path. You’ll come to a cluster of small rocks in the path. Walk northeast another 30 paces and find a scary looking tree stump. It looks a bit like a gorilla. You’ll find “Creeps” the spider crawling around inside.

Go back to the main path and continue on your way headed southeast. You’ll come to a little bridge. Legend has it that a boy named Little Jimmy tripped off this bridge and hit his head on a rock. Fleeing off into the woods, he was never seen again. The locals say he haunts all those who cross this bridge. So, if we were you … .... Next, you’ll come to a very big boulder at the crook in the path. Just to be on the safe side don’t stop here. Keep walking down the little hill. and FAST....FASTER!!!

You’ll come to another stonewall in front of you. Just before you reach the clearing climb through a break in the wall and look for a cluster of stumps. Here you will find a “Scary Black Cat in Training.” Back to the main path, continue following it westward with the orange-marked trees. Hurry past the long axe marked fallen tree. We do! Because, well, you just never know! Rumor has it each mark represents a former Letterboxer!

At the fork in the path take a left headed northwest. This is the blue-marked trail. Crossing the Bridge at the Falls take a little breather and watch for turtles and crawfish. You may also want to look for Little Loch Nessie, a junior version of the famous sea monster that allegedly swims here. Continue on this trail a bit further. You’ll discover a short path down to the pond. Opposite this path look for a leaning tree just a short distance off the path. Look below the roots to find “Screech” the bat nesting. Be careful! He doesn’t appreciate being disturbed!

Back to the main path. Cross a boardwalk above a swampy area. You’ll pass birdhouses on the left and an old rickety fence. Look for the sign to the cemetery and follow it, if you dare! Look for the gravestone that reads: “Allen Son of Preserved and Eunice Hall Died March 8, 1819 Aged 3 years, 2 months and 13 days.” Then, walk to the southeast corner of the wall. “Casper Allen the Ghost” lives in a hole beneath a rock at this very corner. Back to the main path again. Walk to the left of the birdhouse and go through a break in the wall. Take the path on the right. You will come to “Marker #8.” From this marker take ten paces, which will bring you to a small path on the right. Take this path to a stone wall. You will find the “Jack-O-Lantern” hidden at the base of the wall, behind a small cedar covered with brambles.

Continue on the Blue Trail. Cross another wooden bridge and continue on this trail. The Yellow trail meets the Blue trail at two intersections. At the second point where they meet take a quick break on the bench and look north toward the yellow trail. Walk down this trail, quietly, keeping your eye out for the Scary Old Pine tree on the left. You'll spot the tree as you make your way down the trail. This tree has a knot at about seven feet. Don't try to hug it.....it's too big, and the Dancing skeleton may dance up behind you anyway. ( You'll also notice a yellow-trail marked skinny tree about twelve paces further down the trail.) Take five paces north from the Scary Old Pine and notice a small recess to your right. Beyond the recess there is a fallen moss covered tree trunk. If you look closely, you’ll find the “Dancing Skeleton” beneathe.

Now head back to the Blue Trail. As you follow the Blue Trail, you will find yourselves back to the beginning of your adventure. Before you head back to the safety of your car, the “Scary Witch” is yet to be found. Find marker #1 and take 30 paces down the path. The “Scary Witch” is hiding at the base of a large fallen tree to the left of the path. You'll have to walk off the path a bit if you want to meet her. Above her lies a heavy rock....and sometimes....all of a sudden...she pops out unexpectedly with a cackling EEEEEEeHheHeeee....
