The Red-Bellied Woodpecker
For The Birds Series #3

Once upon a time, in a tree far away, lived a little woodpecker. One day his dad went out in search of lunch. He started out in the parking lot by the big playground. He flew over one gate near the parking lot into the playground and finding nothing, went over another gate at the back of the playground. Here he saw some humans eating, but found nothing for his son. Just then he spotted a trail heading off southeast into the woods. So down hill he went. He stopped and tried pecking on a post with a board on it but didn’t find anything there either. He continued on down the hill and came to a swampy area and flew over two wooden bridges. Knowing where he had some holes drilled, he went to the right. Following along the trail with the creek to his right, he kept looking for his son’s lunch. He passed a few small trails to the left and went over a couple of “natural bridges“, but kept going straight until he reached a “T” in the path the humans traveled. Up the hill he flew and when he saw the big fallen tree up near the rocks that that looked like a cave, he remembered that it usually had lots of bugs. So he left the path and flew over toward it. He bounced back and forth between two smaller trees and then he noticed a big grub on the ground wriggling its way in under the edge of the 2nd large upturned rock. As he went after the grub he moved some debris out of the way and found a strange plastic box. He managed to get the box open and saw a familiar scene. He was so excited about his discovery, he forgot all about the grub and rushed back their tree near the parking lot to tell his son, after replacing the box.
