In the spirit of celebrating Lake Merritt Then and Now, I adopted an old box that has long disappeared and thought would be fun to bring back to life. So here you go:

Canadian Bandstand

This box celebrates a Lake Merritt treasure -- The James P. Edoff Memorial Bandstand, built in 1918. This outing also gives you the opportunity to enjoy America's oldest wildlife refuge, a horticultural center and bonsai garden.

From Grand Avenue, turn onto Bellevue Ave. Begin at Lake Merritt’s Rotary Nature Center (600 Bellevue Ave.) Facing the lake, you’ll turn to the right and start walking along the sidewalk/path. You'll pass the boathouse (where hourly boat rentals are available.)

Look across the street for the entrance gate to the Lakeside Horticultural Center. Stay on the lake side of the street. Continue walking and look out for the second gate (always locked.) You want to end up directly opposite this second gate.

There is a small clearing in the trees providing a vista of the lake. Walk down toward the bank and look to your right. Below the well-monogrammed silver-barked tree lies a dead tree which once grew along the ground. This log is hollow. There is a long opening on the side facing you. Look [deep]in the right side of this opening under the bark and leaves. Please re-hide well -- #1 in this series recently went missing.

**Update 10/30/13**

Okay, the "log" you are looking for is located between three other full length trees that have fallen into the lake. Please re-hide this new box as good or better than found with a sufficient amount of leaf litter scattered on top to keep it well hidden out of view. I'm really curious about the original stamp image. If anyone uncovered this box years ago I'd love to see what you found! Obviously I came up with my own interpretation.
