Jim Thorpe Letterbox

I went camping with one of my daughters over the September 24 (2005) weekend in Mauch Chunk. Before leaving I checked the Letterboxing list and was very surprised to find NO boxes in Carbon County PA. (Upon further review, I found a couple old Mapsurfer clues, but they weren’t on the main list.) So I decided to carve and plant a quick one.

Jim Thorpe (or Mauch Chunk) is one of the most scenic areas in the state. It is one of the top 3 mountain biking destinations in the country. The town itself is full of eclectic shops and worth a visit.

I planted this box and carefully recorded the clues on an index card. Then I lost the card. So here goes my best recollection…

Drive to Glen Onoko State Park. Here’s a nice map. http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/maps/lehighgorge_glenonoko.pdf
Basically you take 209 South from the turnpike. Go through town and turn right on 903 North a short distance. When 903 turns right uphill, you go straight, carefully.

Park in the last small lot on your right, before crossing the large wooden bridge.
Take the small trail at the end of the lot into the woods. This will take you a short distance to a very cool train tunnel. You can walk through it and look out over the Lehigh River from the other end. That was just for fun.

Come back to the parking lot and walk towards the river on the main driveway. Cross the wooden bridge. Look for the sign for the Falls Trail. Down the steps, turn right. Pass underneath both bridges. You may see kayakers or other boaters in this area. You will soon come to an area with a bewildering array of trails, crisscrossing every which way.
Look generally away from the river, uphill, kinda towards the railroad bridge. You should see some red dots on trees and even a red arrow on one. You should also see three small stone walls. Make you way up to these walls.

Find the middle wall. Walk to the right hand end. About 5 feet from the end, near the top of the wall is a removable stone. It is fairly large, about 1 foot long, (and therefore heavy). Pull it out and find “Jim Thorpe”.

Please replace discreetly.
Send me a note about your adventure and the condition of the box. Thanks.
