Part of an ongoing series.
Planted and carved by Koyote

DIRECTIONS: From Rt. 7 in Leesburg; take route 15 North towards Luketts. Take a right onto Battlefield Parkway and follow signs to Balls Bluff Battlefield Regional Park. Enter the park and park anywhere in the lot.

CAUTION!!! There are tour guides on Saturdays and Sundays. Please be aware of traffic. These trails can be pretty popular at times. Please be discreet in stamping in. Best bet is to retrieve box and return to the bench to conclude your find.

CLUES: After parking; proceed to the information kiosk. There are usually information pamphlets and maps available. Proceed down the path to the sign reading "The Battle of Balls Bluff" which is just beyond the fence. The path splits just past the sign. Take the path heading the same degrees as the Massachusetts unit's number of the picture on the sign. Continue on this path to the sign telling you the the "Interpretive Loop Trail Begins". Do not go on the interpretive trail but, instead, continue on the main path until you come to the Ball's Bluff cemetary. This is the second smallest national cemetary in the country. There are some signs nearby that will give you some good information on the battle that occurred here.
Go into the cemetary through the iron gate. Find #18 and face it. Take a reading of 315*. The path you need to follow is beyond the walls in this direction. Go back out the gate and get onto this path and continue on. Keep on this path until you come to a bench by a fence. Sit here and admire the Maryland scenery beyond. Look over your shoulder to your right and spuy a tree with 2 blazes. Follow the path that is in the direction of the top blaze. Follow this path until you come to "Union Artillery". Standing at this sign, take a bearing of 150*. Walk in this direction for 21 steps to a large tree. Sol, Norse goddess of the sun, is behind the tree at it's base. Please stamp in discreetly and rehide carefully. Please remember, this can be a busy park. Safe trails! Koyote
