Take I-91 to exit 15 and go east on Route 68 toward Durham. Go over the railroad tracks near the Tilcon quarry. At the junction of Route 68 and Route 157 you will see a spot to park at. Park there. Now for the hard part, you must cross Route 68 to the trail head that goes south. Be careful! I think the speed limit here must be 90.

Take the trail heading south.

By the way, the trail you are taking is the Mattabesett Trail, which is being considered by the National Park Service to become a National Scenic Trail. It (and many other Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails) are maintained by volunteers coordinated by the Connecticut Forest & Park Association (CFPA). Good ol’ CFPA (a non-profit group) was founded in 1895! That’s old! Then the Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails were founded in 1929. Learn more about CFPA at www.ctwoodlands.org.

Now, back to the trail, follow the buried fiber optic cable a little way, then the Mattabesett Trail bears right, away from the buried cable. Follow the trail a while. You are getting closer when a dark hemlock filled valley appears off to the left. When you reach Gilligan’s Island, I hope the stream beds aren’t dry (to get the island effect). Look for the tree that is so tired, it is sitting down on a rock. Reach between the tree’s feet and get the letterbox out. Don’t be fresh!

Now you can continue on to Tri-Mountain and enjoy the view (try out your yodel), or you can turn around and go home (boring).
