Between Carpinteria & Santa Barbara lies the tiny seaside town of Summerland, CA. Take exit 91 North or South from the 101 Freeway.
On Ortega Ridge Road, park by mailbox 484 - there's space for two or three cars there. The trail starts directly across the road & parallels it until you find the second trail sign, at which point you turn left & go downhill along a switchback. Fairly soon you'll find a trail sign on your left & one on your right. Stay to the left and continue on - this whole hike is approximately 0.5 miles, one way. Pretty soon you come to the junction of Valley Club Trail, which you are on, & the Coffin Family Trail, which begins just at the white wooden three bar fence. Walk through the opening & continue to the "view plateau". There's a picnic table & benches - the perfect rest spot! As you rest, facing the ocean, look due west....an old multi trunked oak will be to your right, then some bushes . At the very edge of the bushes look carefully for a cleverly disguised "natural-looking" rock. Once you turn it over you'll see where Possum has decided to get his mail.
