The Silly Turtle Letterbox

Sorry folks... This box went missing a while ago. A kind letterboxer has rescued the turtle and will re-hide it soon. He will be adopting the turtle, so keep your eyes open for a new clue soon.

I think the first box in Peterborough... but I think it will catch on here because of all the geocachers! The box contains a hand carved stamp, stamp pad, log book and pencil. Please stamp or draw in the log book, and feel free to email me with updates on the box.

Depending on where you park this walk will take you between 20 and 40 minutes. The box is hidden along a new urban walking/running/biking/wheeling path in the north end of Peterborough. A map of city walking trails is available at http://www.thekawarthas.net/city_trails_map.html
The silly turtle is along the parkway trail that runs between Jackson Park and the Riverview park and zoo. You will likely need a city map as well if you are not from around here as the quality on the internet map is poor, but it will give you the idea of where you are going.

The trail "begins" roughly at the Riverview zoo. I would recommend parking there and enjoying the animals and play structure if you have little letterboxers. From the zoo you will need to cross Water St and head up Carnegie Avenue. Turn right onto Cumberland and pick up the trail that runs parallel to Cumberland (it starts around Montcalm Dr i believe).

Directions to the letterbox start from the corner of Royal Drive and Cumberland Rd, so you could start from here if you want a shorter walk. You want to follow the trail heading in a south/westerly direction. Make your way along the path as it follows Cumberland. After a few minutes the path curves and heads into a more wooded area. After approximately 15 minutes at an easy walking pace you should see a bench on the right built into a cedar tree. There is a grove with many cedars on the left side of the trail here too. Enter the clearing on the right that is just behind the cedar with the bench. Stand in the clearing facing the path and you should see seven cedar trees in a straight line. Count from left to right and stand in front of the fifth tree. Now turn so that your back is to the path. You should see two small trees side by side about 6 paces in front of you. The silly turtle is lying at the base of the tree on the left.

Please make sure to cover it up well when you leave with bark/rocks/other materials to keep it hidden.

Have fun and plant some new boxes!!!
